The season began in late August or early September 2011 and ended in May 2012 with the last matchday of the European play-off round. Olympiacos were the defending champions, having won their 38th Greek championship in the 2010–11 season. The league comprised 13 teams from the 2010–11 season and three promoted teams from the 2010–11 Football League. Teams AEL, Panserraikos, Iraklis, Olympiacos Volos and Kavala were relegated at the end of the 2010–11 season. AEL and Panserraikos were relegated on virtue of their league position at the end of the season; AEL had to return to the Football League, formerly known as Beta Ethniki, after six seasons, while Panserraikos were relegated after just one season. Olympiacos Volos and Kavala were initially relegated to the Delta Ethniki due to the ongoing match-fixing scandal,http://www.contra.gr/Soccer/Hellas/Superleague/olympvolou/sth-d-ethnikh-olympiakos-voloy-kai-kavala.1338610.html Olympiakos Volou and Kavala to Delta Ethniki Contra.gr 25 August 2011 el 15 April 2019 https://web.archive.org/web/20190415205038/https://www.contra.gr/Soccer/Hellas/Superleague/olympvolou/sth-d-ethnikh-olympiakos-voloy-kai-kavala.1338610.html dead but after an appeal, both teams demanded to have their cases rechecked.http://www.contra.gr/Soccer/Hellas/Superleague/stimena/tha-eksetastoun-kai-pali-oi-fakeloi-olympiakou-voloy-kai-kavalas.1359856.html Postponement until re-evaluation Contra.gr 8 September 2011 el 30 October 2017 https://web.archive.org/web/20171030040954/http://www.contra.gr/Soccer/Hellas/Superleague/stimena/tha-eksetastoun-kai-pali-oi-fakeloi-olympiakou-voloy-kai-kavalas.1359856.html dead The Professional Sports Committee refused, however, and the original penalty stood.http://www.contra.gr/Soccer/Hellas/sth-d-ethnikh-olympiakos-voloy-kai-kavala.1370616.html Olympiakos Volou and Kavala definitely to Delta Ethniki Contra.gr 15 September 2011 el 30 October 2017 https://web.archive.org/web/20171030041023/http://www.contra.gr/Soccer/Hellas/sth-d-ethnikh-olympiakos-voloy-kai-kavala.1370616.html dead On 22 October 2011, almost two months after the league had started, they were replaced by Doxa Drama and Levadiakos.http://www.sport24.gr/football/ellada/SuperLeague/sth_superleague_o_levadeiakos_kai_h_doksa_dramas.1421093.html Doxa Dramas and Levadiakos to Superleague Sport24 22 October 2011 22 October 2011 el 19 October 2014 https://web.archive.org/web/20141019160908/http://www.sport24.gr/football/ellada/SuperLeague/sth_superleague_o_levadeiakos_kai_h_doksa_dramas.1421093.html dead Iraklis were denied a licence for the 2011–12 season over unpaid debtshttp://www.epo.gr/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=18771:2011-04-20-12-07-48&catid=83:2010-02-22-21-13-22&Itemid=291 Αnnouncement for the teams receiving UEFA licence for the 2011–12 season (in greek) Hellenic Football Federation 16 May 2011 epo.gr https://web.archive.org/web/20110426115413/http://www.epo.gr/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=18771:2011-04-20-12-07-48&catid=83:2010-02-22-21-13-22&Itemid=291 26 April 2011 dead and put into last place of the league table.http://www.contra.gr/Soccer/Hellas/Superleague/article1086772.ece Relegation for Iraklis, Asteras Tripolis saved Contra.gr 8 September 2011 el The club was thus demoted to the 2011–12 Football League, concluding a twenty-nine-year run in the highest football league of Greece. However, they do not all start with 0 points. Instead, a weighting system applies to the teams' standing at the start of the play-off mini-league. The team finishing fifth in the Super League will start the play-off with 0 points. The fifth placed team's end of season tally of points is subtracted from the sum of the points that other teams have. This number is then divided by five. Before the last round of matches, fifth-placed club AEK Athens earned 48 points during the regular season. Based on this number and the calculations above, Panathinaikos as runners-up began the play-offs with four points ((66–48)/5 = 3.6, rounded to 4) while PAOK and Atromitos started with zero points each ((50–48)/5 = 0.4, rounded to 0). main WDL Play-offs 4 Q 2 PAO AEK ATR PAOK 3 1 2 5 4 4 3 0 3 7 5 0 2 2 2 6 6 0 2 1 3 3 6 0 green2 Qualification for the Champions League third qualifying round CL3 inherit Ineligible for the 2012–13 European competitions.AEK AEK Athens were not licensed to play in the Europa League 2012–2013 and therefore were replaced by the 6th placed team in the league table, Asteras Tripolis, qualified for the second qualifying round.
