The tournament was won by Boca Juniors after defeating Santos in a rematch of the 1963 Copa Libertadores Finals. With this title, Boca Juniors achieved their fifth Copa Libertadores title and third in four years. Pre-Libertadores From 1998 to 2002, Mexican and Venezuelan clubs played a mini tournament known as Copa Pre Libertadores to determine two teams that would qualify to the next year's Copa Libertadores group stage. In 2002 Pumas UNAM participated in the Pre Libertadores trying to earn a spot in the 2003 edition of the tournament.Historia de la Pre-Libertadores http://www.forest.ula.ve/~pedroq/hisprejv.htm Javier Minniti https://web.archive.org/web/20041210155257/http://www.forest.ula.ve/~pedroq/hisprejv.htm 10 December 2004 21 July 2020 Spanish main WDL PL CONMEBOL y FBR grey MEX Cruz Azul VEN 1930 Estudiantes de Mérida VEN 1930 Nacional Táchira MEX Pumas UNAM CAZ EST TAC UNM complete 3 2 1 11 7 2 1 3 7 9 1 0 5 6 16 4 1 1 12 4 UNM CAZ EST TAC Q KO KO green1 Advance to group stage 2–1 4–0 0–2 1–1 1–0 1–0 2–3 3–2 1–2 1–1 3–1 4–0 dmy 2002 10 22 16:00 Estudiantes de Mérida VEN 1930 1–0 http://www.forovinotinto.com/internacional/ficha.php?id=425 MEX Pumas UNAM Panigutti 70 Estadio Guillermo Soto Rosa Mérida, Venezuela Eduardo Lecca (Peru) dmy 2002 10 24 16:00 Nacional Táchira VEN 1930 1–2 http://www.forovinotinto.com/internacional/ficha.php?id=426 MEX Pumas UNAM Clóvis Bento 15 Beltrán 77 A.
