American college football season August 2023 February 2026 1984 Fresno State Bulldogs football Pacific Coast Athletic Association PCAA 7–5 4–3 Jim Sweeney 7th Bulldog Stadium The 1984 Fresno State Bulldogs football team represented California State University, Fresno as a member of the Pacific Coast Athletic Association (PCAA) during the 1984 NCAA Division I-A football season. Led by seventh-year head coach Jim Sweeney, Fresno State finished the season with an overall record of 6–6 and a mark of 3–4 in conference play, tying for fourth place in the PCAA. The Bulldogs played their home games at Bulldog Stadium in Fresno, California. After the 1984 season, it was discovered that the UNLV Rebels had used multiple ineligible players during both the 1983 and 1984 seasons. As a result, UNLV's win in 1984 over Fresno State was forfeited, adjusting the Bulldogs' record to 7–5 overall and 4–3 in conference play, moving them into a tie for third place in the PCAA.https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1985-03-13-sp-22150-story.html UNLV Punished for Using Ineligible Football Players Los Angeles Times 13 March 1985 December 22, 2016 Schedule September 1 w y y Arizona Arizona Stadium Tucson, AZ 27–22 43,477 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-modesto-bee-80-yard-play-with-35-sec/170139616/ The Modesto Bee 80-yard play with 35 seconds left lifts Fresno over Arizona September 2, 1984 April 12, 2025 Newspapers.com September 8 w y y Boise State Bronco Stadium Boise, ID rivalry 37–21 19,252 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-fresno-bee-dogs-swamp-boise-state-i/158792821/ The Fresno Bee 'Dogs swamp Boise State in 2nd win September 9, 1984 April 12, 2025 Newspapers.com September 15 w y Cal Poly Bulldog Stadium Fresno, CA 14–0 30,991 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-fresno-bee-dogs-defense-blanks-cal/170167769/ The Fresno Bee 'Dogs' defense blanks Cal Poly September 16, 1984 April 12, 2025 Newspapers.com September 22 w Long Beach State Bulldog Stadium Fresno, CA 20–17 31,162 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-daily-breeze-long-beach-st-fumble-l/170167888/ The Daily Breeze Long Beach St. fumble leads to winning FG for Fresno St. September 23, 1984 April 12, 2025 Newspapers.com September 29 w New Mexico State Bulldog Stadium Fresno, CA 53–24 32,952 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-fresno-bee-dogs-bomb-new-mexico-sta/170168044/ The Fresno Bee 'Dogs bomb New Mexico State 53–24 September 30, 1984 April 12, 2025 Newspapers.com October 6 l y y Hawaii Aloha Stadium Halawa, HI rivalry 15–27 41,999 https://www.newspapers.com/article/oakland-tribune-hawaii-deals-fresno-firs/170137233/ Oakland Tribune Hawaii deals Fresno first loss of season October 8, 1984 April 12, 2025 Newspapers.com October 20 w Utah State Bulldog Stadium Fresno, CA 43–18 31,463 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-los-angeles-times-fresno-state-routs/170168140/ The Los Angeles Times Fresno State routs Utah State, 43–18 October 21, 1984 April 12, 2025 Newspapers.com October 27 l y San Jose State Spartan Stadium San Jose, CA rivalry 17–18 17,047 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-peninsula-times-tribune-sjs-wins-in/170168237/ The Peninsula Times Tribune SJS wins in final 29 seconds, 18–17 October 28, 1984 April 12, 2025 Newspapers.com November 3 l y Cal State Fullerton Santa Ana Stadium Santa Ana, CA 17–20 12,121 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-los-angeles-times-titans-rally-to-wi/170168365/ The Los Angeles Times Titans rally to win their 10th straight November 4, 1984 April 12, 2025 Newspapers.com November 10 l Pacific (CA) Bulldog Stadium Fresno, CA 6–24 24,684 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-san-francisco-examiner-pacific-qb-be/170168509/ The San Francisco Examiner Pacific QB Berner stymies Fresno November 11, 1984 April 12, 2025 Newspapers.com November 17 l y Montana State Bulldog Stadium Fresno, CA 31–35 24,088 https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=IItfAAAAIBAJ&sjid=7C4MAAAAIBAJ&pg=2990%2C831463 Lewiston Morning Tribune Associated Press Montana State rallies past Fresno State November 18, 1984 April 12, 2025 Newspapers.com November 24 w y y UNLV Sam Boyd Silver Bowl Whitney, NV 13–27 (forfeit win) 12,155 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-fresno-bee-when-it-rains-it-pours-o/170168679/ The Fresno Bee When it rains, it pours on Bulldogs November 25, 1984 April 12, 2025 Newspapers.comMcCurdie Jim UNLV Punished for Using Ineligible Football Players https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1985-03-13-sp-22150-story.html April 12, 2025 The Los Angeles Times March 13, 1985 1984 Fresno State Bulldogs Schedule and Results https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/schools/fresno-state/1984-schedule.html College Football at Sports-Reference.com Sports Reference January 29, 2025 1984 Football Schedule https://gobulldogs.com/sports/football/schedule/1984 Fresno State Athletics January 29, 2025 Fresno State Football Media Guide https://gobulldogs.com/documents/2024/8/21/5._2024_Record_Book.pdf Fresno State Athletics 122 January 29, 2025 Team players in the NFL No Fresno State Bulldogs were selected in the 1985 NFL draft.https://www.pro-football-reference.com/draft/1985.htm 1985 NFL Draft Pro-Football-Reference.com December 7, 2016 December 21, 2007 https://web.archive.org/web/20071221193413/http://www.pro-football-reference.com/draft/1985.htm deadhttps://www.pro-football-reference.com/schools/fresnost/ Fresno St. Players/Alumni Pro-Football-Reference.com December 12, 2016 The following finished their college career in 1984, were not drafted, but played in the NFL.
