Melbourne had a slightly better record against the remaining senior clubs (Melbourne having a record of 6-1-1 to Carlton's record of 5-0-5), but such was Carlton's and Melbourne's dominance at the time that their matches against the other clubs had little influence on the premiership.REVIEW OF THE SEASON https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/139125018 Fairplay The Australasian 12 April 2025 12 21 November 1874 Club records The below table is set of results for senior clubs during the 1874 season across all matches, including those against senior, junior and intercolonial clubs. The Australasian and The Leader newspapers indicated Albert-park was the third best club, with North Melbourne fourth and St Kilda fifth. Although North Melbourne's win–loss record appears superior to Albert-park's, its easier fixture (four of its 12 matches were played against junior teams) was taken into account. Tables published in The Argus from 1889 and in the Football Record from 1912 to 1923 listed St Kilda as the third-placed club in 1874, but contemporary sources dispute this. The Football Premiership https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/6281085 The Argus 12 April 2025 5 23 September 1889Wilson Caroline History of the AFL could be turned on its head https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/history-of-the-afl-could-be-turned-on-its-head-20140620-zsglu.html The Age 12 April 2025 https://web.archive.org/web/20230929215206/https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/history-of-the-afl-could-be-turned-on-its-head-20140620-zsglu.html 29 September 2023 20 June 2014 + Pos Position on ladder Team Pld Games played W Won L Lost D Drawn GF Goals for GA Goals against 1 (P) 18 12 0 6 33 6 2 18 12 5 1 35 10 3 19 7 6 6 17 13 – 12 7 2 3 11 4 – 18 2 8 8 8 27 Source:Jones Tom The football season of 1874 https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/198495863 Leader 12 April 2025 11 10 October 1874Un Jouer a Ballon THE FOOTBALL SEASON, 1874 https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/108497996 The Record and Emerald Hill and Sandridge Advertiser 12 April 2025 3 24 September 1874Carlton Football Club https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/143014385 The Australasian 12 April 2025 12 1 May 1875Melbourne Football Club https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/143014386 The Australasian 12 April 2025 12 1 May 18751874 Fixture https://www.blueseum.org/1874+Fixture Blueseum 12 April 2025 https://web.archive.org/web/20250117112227/https://www.blueseum.org/1874+Fixture 17 January 2025Carlton 1874 season, including second game v North Melbourne played on September 5 (P) Premiers Provincial was the best performing provincial team of the 1874 season.FOOTBALL https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/201973858 The Ballarat Star 13 April 2025 4 28 May 1874 It was undefeated in provincial matches, and it held the newly established Western District Challenge Cup throughout the season, but lost three matches against metropolitan clubs.Tippet Harrison Barwon Football Club: How a 1870s blue-collar rival and a riot shaped the Geelong Football Club https://www.geelongadvertiser.com.au/sport/afl/geelong-cats/barwon-football-club-how-a-1870s-bluecollar-rival-and-a-riot-shaped-the-geelong-football-club/news-story/d67afc620c5256c7fcb8cacd39f6ce06 Geelong Advertiser 13 April 2025 https://archive.today/20231214143804/https://www.geelongadvertiser.com.au/sport/afl/geelong-cats/barwon-football-club-how-a-1870s-bluecollar-rival-and-a-riot-shaped-the-geelong-football-club/news-story/d67afc620c5256c7fcb8cacd39f6ce06?amp&nk=53025c019febbb75e61c0fa010890f82-1702564697 14 December 2023 15 September 2022 Some sources from 1874 place Geelong in fourth (across all matches) or fifth (only matches against senior clubs) out of six clubs.Geelong v.
