It was also decided to extend the president's term from three to four years, but only from the next presidential election onwards. In the first round of voting, one of the candidates, incumbent President Guntis Ulmanis collected the necessary number of votes to be re-elected President of Latvia.http://www.saeima.lv/steno/st_96/st1806.html Latvijas Republikas 6.Saeimas ārkārtas sesijas sēde June 18, 1996 Alfrēds Čepānis Čepānis, Alfrēds https://web.archive.org/web/20070927011926/http://www.saeima.lv/steno/st_96/st1806.html September 27, 2007 Saeima Guntis Ulmanis Latvian Farmers' Union 53 Ilga Kreituse Democratic Party "Saimnieks" 25 Imants Liepa People's Movement for Latvia 14 Alfrēds Rubiks Socialist Party of Latvia 5 References Category:Presidential elections in Latvia Latvia Category:1996 in Latvia
