It was the 44th year of season play for Houston. The team was coached by third-year head coach Jack Pardee. Serving as offensive coordinator was John Jenkins, who succeeded Pardee as head coach following the season. The team played its games off-campus at the Astrodome, which had recently received upgrades to seat 62,439 spectators. These Cougars boasted the first squad to have a 4,000-yard passer (Andre Ware), 1,000-yard rusher (Chuck Weatherspoon), and 1,000-yard receiver (Manny Hazard) in FBS history, finishing the season ranked as No. 14 by the AP Poll.2014-08-07 25 years later, Andre Ware's season matters https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/page/theseason0807ware/houston-andre-ware-changed-game-25-years-ago 2024-05-22 ESPN.com en Junior quarterback Andre Ware won the Heisman Trophy and Davey O'Brien Award following the conclusion of the season. Under probation by the NCAA from rules violated in prior seasons, Houston was ineligible for participation in a bowl game and could not be listed in the Coaches Poll. The Cougars were also barred from live television. Ware became the first Black quarterback to win the Heisman Trophy when he threw for 4,699 yards, 46 touchdowns, and set 27 NCAA records. Many of the records were thanks to the innovative use of the run and shoot offense, which his successor, David Klingler, also used to great effect. The Cougars ended the season ranked the No. 14 team in the nation by the Associated Press. Ware then declared for the NFL draft, foregoing his senior year.Houston: History & Records http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/hou/sports/m-footbl/auto_pdf/hou-09-mg-section8.pdf University of Houston Athletic Department August 24, 2019 March 2, 2012 https://web.archive.org/web/20120302195140/http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/hou/sports/m-footbl/auto_pdf/hou-09-mg-section8.pdf dead Schedule 1989 AP September 2 w y y 21 UNLV Sam Boyd Silver Bowl Whitney, NV 69–0 22,416 https://www.newspapers.com/article/times-record-news-ware-uh-annihilate-un/174052484/ Times Record News Ware, UH annihilate UNLV, 69–0 September 4, 1989 June 7, 2025 Newspapers.com September 23 w y y 17 Arizona State Sun Devil Stadium Tempe, AZ 36–7 67,357 https://www.newspapers.com/article/arizona-daily-star-houston-gains-744-yar/174052636/ The Arizona Daily Star Houston gains 744 yards in 36–7 win over ASU September 24, 1989 June 7, 2025 Newspapers.com September 30 w y 14 Temple Houston Astrodome Houston, TX 65–7 15,121 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-galveston-daily-news-uh-wares-out-te/173780051/ The Galveston Daily News UH Wares out Temple, 65–7 October 1, 1989 June 7, 2025 Newspapers.com October 7 w 12 Baylor Houston Astrodome Houston, TX rivalry 66–10 31,433 https://www.newspapers.com/article/san-angelo-standard-times-cougars-overwh/174052753/ San Angelo Standard-Times Cougars overwhelm Bears 66–10 October 8, 1989 June 7, 2025 Newspapers.com October 14 l y 8 Texas A&M Kyle Field College Station, TX 13–17 66,423 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-tyler-courier-times-am-stops-coogs/174051607/ The Tyler Courier-Times-Telegraph A&M stops Coogs October 15, 1989 June 7, 2025 Newspapers.com October 21 w y 16 SMU Houston Astrodome Houston, TX rivalry 95–21 20,009 https://www.newspapers.com/article/wisconsin-state-journal-houston-rips-smu/174052882/ Wisconsin State Journal Houston rips SMU, 95–21; totals 1,021 yards October 22, 1989 June 7, 2025 Newspapers.com October 28 l y 12 Arkansas 13 War Memorial Stadium Little Rock, AR 39–45 55,112 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-times-a-classic-duel-in-little-rock/174050271/ The Shreveport Times A classic duel in Little Rock October 29, 1989 June 7, 2025 Newspapers.com November 4 w y 17 TCU Amon G.
