none October 2026 June 2018 The knockout stage of the 2010 FIFA World Cup was the second and final stage of the World Cup, following the group stage. It began on 26 June with the round of 16 matches, and ended on 11 July with the final match of the tournament held at Soccer City, Johannesburg, in which Spain beat the Netherlands 1–0 after extra time to claim their first World Cup. The top two teams from each group (16 in total) advanced to the knockout stage to compete in a single-elimination–style tournament. A match for third place was included and played between the two losing teams of the semi-finals. In the knockout stage (including the final), if a match was level at the end of 90 minutes, two periods of extra time (15 minutes each) would be played. If the score was still level after extra time, the match would be decided by a penalty shoot-out.https://www.fifa.com/mm/document/tournament/competition/fifa_wc_south_africa_2010_regulations_en_14123.pdf Fifa World Cup South Africa 2010 Regulations 42–44 July 2007 1 December 2011 dead https://web.archive.org/web/20070926230651/http://www.fifa.com/mm/document/tournament/competition/fifa_wc_south_africa_2010_regulations_en_14123.pdf 26 September 2007 FIFA.com Fédération Internationale de Football Association All times listed are South African Standard Time (UTC+2) Qualified teams The top two placed teams from each of the eight groups qualified for the knockout stage. Suárez's first was scored when Diego Forlán made a low cross from the left that was not dealt with by the South Korean defence, leaving Suárez to score at the back post. Uruguay subsequently adopted a defensive posture, and South Korea had more chances to score. Eventually, Lee Chung-yong equalised in the 68th minute, scoring a headed goal following a free kick. Despite South Korea then having chances to win the match, Suárez scored Uruguay's winner in the 80th minute with a curling strike from the edge of the 18-yard box that went in off the inside of the post; this goal was regarded as one of the tournament's best.http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/world_cup_2010/matches/match_49/default.stm Uruguay 2–1 South Korea Chowdhury Saj 26 June 2010 BBC News 2 July 2010 Korea missed more good chances in the final minutes of the game, giving Uruguay victory and passage to the quarter-finals for the first time since 1970, where they would face Ghana.https://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5i0kw0Ykj_quQko06E86XJRwq9AiwD9GJ702G0 Uruguay beats South Korea 2–1 in round of 16 Ritter Karl 26 June 2010 Associated Press 30 June 2010June 2024 medicmedic After the match, Uruguayan coach Óscar Tabárez attributed his team's successful run to the number of players with experience at top-level overseas clubs.https://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/world-cup-2010/teams/uruguay/7858926/Uruguay-glory-down-to-overseas-exploits.html https://archive.today/20120911223925/http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/world-cup-2010/teams/uruguay/7858926/Uruguay-glory-down-to-overseas-exploits.html dead 11 September 2012 Uruguay glory down to overseas exploits 28 June 2010 The Daily Telegraph 30 June 2010 London South Korean coach Huh Jung-moo claimed his side "controlled" the match and that Uruguay's goals were "lucky".http://www.goal.com/en/news/1863/world-cup-2010/2010/06/26/1996911/world-cup-2010-south-korea-coach-huh-jung-moo-rues-uruguays South Korea Coach Huh Jung-Moo Rues Uruguay's 'Lucky' Goals Mira Luis 26 June 2010 goal.com 2 July 2010 2010 6 26 y 16:00 URU 2010 FIFA World Cup knockout stage#Uruguay vs South Korea 2–1 KOR 1997 Suárez 8 80 Lee Chung-yong 68 Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, Port Elizabeth 30,597 Wolfgang Stark (Germany) https://www.fifa.com/en/match-centre/match/17/249715/249717/300061504 Uruguay vs Korea Republic Round of 16 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa FIFA 1 May 2026 http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/matches/round=249717/match=300061504/report.html 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa – Matches – Uruguay v Korea Republic FIFA 1 May 2026 dead https://web.archive.org/web/20171206153038/http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/matches/round=249717/match=300061504/report.html 6 December 2017 https://digitalhub.fifa.com/m/47e9a5a7e3ecc992/original/qryu19msuwcsv5ce0kmj-pdf.pdf Match Report – Round of 16 – Uruguay v Korea Republic FIFA 26 June 2010 1 May 2026 live https://web.archive.org/web/20260413060500/https://digitalhub.fifa.com/m/47e9a5a7e3ecc992/original/qryu19msuwcsv5ce0kmj-pdf.pdf 13 April 2026 _uru10H _uru10H _uru10H _uru10h _uru10h 87CEEB 87CEEB 87CEEB 000000 000000 Uruguayhttps://digitalhub.fifa.com/m/606eb4204071947d/original/mhlaq8svxgj1a4l17rhy-pdf.pdf Tactical Line-up – Round of 16 – Uruguay v Korea Republic FIFA.com Fédération Internationale de Football Association 26 June 2010 26 June 2010 live https://web.archive.org/web/20260522183818/https://digitalhub.fifa.com/m/606eb4204071947d/original/mhlaq8svxgj1a4l17rhy-pdf.pdf 22 May 2026 _kor10a _kor10a _kor10a _kor10h _whitetop FFFFFF FFFFFF FFFFFF FFFFFF FFFFFF South Korea GK 1 Fernando MusleraRB 16Maxi PereiraCB 2 Diego Lugano (c)CB 3 Diego Godín 46LB 4 Jorge FucileDM 15Diego PérezRM 17Egidio Arévalo RíosLM 11Álvaro Pereira 74RF 7 Edinson CavaniCF 10Diego ForlánLF 9 Luis Suárez 84Substitutions:DF 6 Mauricio Victorino 46MF 14Nicolás Lodeiro 74MF 20Álvaro Fernández 84Manager:Óscar Tabárez300px GK 18Jung Sung-ryongRB 22Cha Du-ri 69CB 4 Cho Yong-hyung 83CB 14Lee Jung-sooLB 12Lee Young-pyoCM 16Ki Sung-yong 85CM 8 Kim Jung-woo 38RW 13Kim Jae-sung 61AM 7 Park Ji-sung (c)LW 17Lee Chung-yongCF 10Park Chu-youngSubstitutions:FW 20Lee Dong-gook 61FW 19Yeom Ki-hun 85Manager:Huh Jung-moo Man of the Match: Luis Suárez (Uruguay) Assistant referees: Jan-Hendrik Salver (Germany) Mike Pickel (Germany) Fourth official: Joel Aguilar (El Salvador) Fifth official: Juan Zumba (El Salvador) United States vs Ghana The match between the United States and Ghana was played on 26 June 2010 at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg. The match was won by Ghana in extra time after Asamoah Gyan broke a 1–1 deadlock. Kevin-Prince Boateng scored the opening goal of the match for Ghana in the fifth minute. The goal followed an error by Ricardo Clark, who lost the ball to the Ghanaians in midfield. Boateng took the ball to the edge of the penalty area, beating United States goalkeeper Tim Howard with a low left-footed shot. Landon Donovan equalised with a penalty kick in the 62nd minute, which was awarded after Jonathan Mensah fouled Clint Dempsey. The United States had chances to win the game thereafter but were unable to get past Ghana goalkeeper Richard Kingson. The match thus went to extra time. In the third minute, Gyan latched onto a high long ball, chesting it down and holding off two defenders before scoring the winner.http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/world_cup_2010/matches/match_50/default.stm USA 1–2 Ghana (aet) Fletcher Paul 26 June 2010 BBC News British Broadcasting Corporation 2 July 2010 After the match, Ghana's coach Milovan Rajevac hailed his side's achievement in becoming one of the "best eight teams in the world", but regretted the number of players that would miss the quarter-final match against Uruguay because of injury or suspension.https://www.google.com/hostednews/canadianpress/article/ALeqM5g_YRpeJ79U5ZmX0glYNyKqF-0Wtw https://archive.today/20100629131630/http://www.google.com/hostednews/canadianpress/article/ALeqM5g_YRpeJ79U5ZmX0glYNyKqF-0Wtw dead 29 June 2010 Gyan scores in extra time to give Ghana 2–1 win over US and spot in quarters Condie Stuart 27 June 2010 The Canadian Press 30 June 2010 The president of the United States Soccer Federation, Sunil Gulati, lamented the team's failure to make the quarter-finals and thereby further raise the profile of the sport in the United States.http://www.dailyherald.com/story/?id=391119 USA's setback vs. Ghana bigger than just one game Schwarz Orrin 30 June 2010 Daily Herald 30 June 2010 2010 6 26 y 20:30 USA 2010 FIFA World Cup knockout stage#United States vs Ghana 1–2 yes GHA Donovan 62 pen. The Dutch had chances to extend their lead in the second half, with the most prominent coming when Robben cut inside on his left foot just like he did when he scored the first goal, but this time, Slovak goalkeeper Ján Mucha saved the shot going to his far post. The Slovaks also had two big opportunities to equalise but forced a save from Maarten Stekelenburg each time. The Dutch sealed their win in the 84th minute when Wesley Sneijder scored off an assist from Dirk Kuyt into an unguarded net after Kuyt got the ball past Mucha. Róbert Vittek slotted a penalty kick late in stoppage time, but it was no more than a consolation goal for Slovakia. The first half produced the occasional chance on goal with Lucas Barrios having a shot saved shortly before a long-distance shot from Daisuke Matsui hit the crossbar of Paraguay's goal. The second half was similar, with either side producing occasional chances to score rather than periods of dominance. The result of the deadlock was extra time, which continued goalless. The match suddenly became eventful in the second half due to a string of penalty kicks. First, Óscar Cardozo was pulled down by Gerard Piqué in Spain's penalty area and Paraguay was awarded a penalty. Cardozo took the penalty himself but it was saved by Spain's goalkeeper Iker Casillas. Spain soon after launched an attack at the other end of the field, in which David Villa was ruled by the referee to have been brought down by Antolín Alcaraz. Xabi Alonso stepped up to take the penalty kick and seemed to have scored, only for the referee to order it be retaken because of encroachment by a Spanish player into the penalty area before the kick was taken. Xabi Alonso's retake was saved by Paraguayan goalkeeper Justo Villar. As a result, the score remained 0–0 after the three penalty kicks. However, Spain ultimately managed to take the lead in the 82nd minute: David Villa collected a rebounded shot off the right post from Pedro, to score himself with a shot that again hit the right post before going in off the left post. The goal turned out to be the winner for Spain. After the match, Spain's coach Vicente del Bosque conceded that his side were not playing at their best and were starved of possession. He also noted his view that Spain's next opponents Germany were the best team at the World Cup.http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/world_cup_2010/8786181.stm Spain must improve, admits coach 3 July 2010 BBC Sport British Broadcasting Corporation 5 July 2010 Paraguay's coach Gerardo Martino stated he would be leaving his position at the end of his contract.http://www.skysports.com/football/world-cup-2010/story/0,27032,12098_6246020,00.html Martino quits Paraguay Razwan Mirza 5 July 2010 Sky Sports 5 July 2010 2010 7 3 y 20:30 PAR 1990 2010 FIFA World Cup knockout stage#Paraguay vs Spain 0–1 ESP Villa 83 Ellis Park Stadium, Johannesburg 55,359 Carlos Batres (Guatemala) https://www.fifa.com/en/match-centre/match/17/249715/249718/300061506 Paraguay vs Spain Quarter-final 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa FIFA 1 May 2026 http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/matches/round=249718/match=300061506/report.html 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa – Matches – Paraguay v Spain FIFA 1 May 2026 dead https://web.archive.org/web/20170210105324/http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/matches/round=249718/match=300061506/report.html 10 February 2017 https://digitalhub.fifa.com/m/533e5746555a87a1/original/nrbs3gpuu9ev3ybfnolm-pdf.pdf Match Report – Quarter-final – Paraguay v Spain FIFA 3 July 2010 1 May 2026 live https://web.archive.org/web/20260413060747/https://digitalhub.fifa.com/m/533e5746555a87a1/original/nrbs3gpuu9ev3ybfnolm-pdf.pdf 13 April 2026 _par10h _par10h _par10h _par10a _par10h 0000FF 0000FF 0000FF 0000FF FFFFFF Paraguayhttps://digitalhub.fifa.com/m/2c727454d8c86d70/original/v9obx9rzfq3skgzsyy5k-pdf.pdf Tactical Line-up – Quarter-finals – Paraguay v Spain FIFA.com Fédération Internationale de Football Association 3 July 2010 3 July 2010 live https://web.archive.org/web/20260522173035/https://digitalhub.fifa.com/m/2c727454d8c86d70/original/v9obx9rzfq3skgzsyy5k-pdf.pdf 22 May 2026 _esp10a1 _esp10a1 _esp10a1 _esp10a _spaina2010 003366 003366 003366 003366 003366 Spain GK 1 Justo Villar (c)RB 2 Darío VerónCB 14Paulo da SilvaCB 21Antolín Alcaraz 59LB 3 Claudio Morel 71DM 15Víctor Cáceres 59 84RM 11Jonathan Santana 88CM 8 Édgar Barreto 64LM 16Cristian RiverosSS 18Nelson Valdez 72CF 7 Óscar CardozoSubstitutions:MF 13Enrique Vera 64FW 9 Roque Santa Cruz 72FW 19Lucas Barrios 84Manager:ARG 1861 Gerardo Martino300px GK 1 Iker Casillas (c)RB 15Sergio RamosCB 3 Gerard Piqué 57CB 5 Carles Puyol 84LB 11Joan CapdevilaDM 16Sergio Busquets 63RM 6 Andrés IniestaCM 8 XaviLM 14Xabi Alonso 75SS 7 David VillaCF 9 Fernando Torres 56Substitutions:MF 10Cesc Fàbregas 56FW 18Pedro 75DF 4 Carlos Marchena 84Manager:Vicente del Bosque Man of the Match: Andrés Iniesta (Spain) Assistant referees: Leonel Leal (Costa Rica) Carlos Pastrana (Honduras) Fourth official: Benito Archundia (Mexico) Fifth official: Héctor Vergara (Canada) Semi-finals Uruguay vs Netherlands Uruguay played the Netherlands in the first semi-final on 6 July 2010 at the Cape Town Stadium. However, the Netherlands were unable to capitalise on their lead, as Diego Forlán equalised in the 41st minute (1–1) when his shot from 25 yards hit squarely in the middle of the goal was misjudged by goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg who missed it by millimetres. The Netherlands regained the lead in the second half, as a pass from Rafael van der Vaart reached Wesley Sneijder who hit it into the side-netting as Muslera dived and missed it by inches. Three minutes later, Kuyt crossed to Robben, who headed it in to make it 3–1. The Netherlands suffered a late scare when Maxi Pereira, who missed a penalty against Ghana, scored a stoppage-time free kick; however, the match finished 3–2 despite desperate Uruguayan attempts to equalise.http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/world_cup_2010/matches/match_61/default.stm Uruguay 2–3 Netherlands Bevan Chris 6 July 2010 BBC Sport 8 July 2010 After the match, Uruguay coach Óscar Tabárez spoke of his pride in his team for reaching the semi-finals.https://www.theaustralian.com.au/archive/sportold/skippers-stunning-goal-inspires-dutch-surge-into-final/news-story/47af6a1e6ed07140760c817c075ac91e Skipper's stunning goal inspires Dutch surge into final 8 July 2010 The Australian subscription 8 July 2010 2010 7 6 y 20:30 URU 2010 FIFA World Cup knockout stage#Uruguay vs Netherlands 2–3 NED Forlán 41 M.
