It featured 19 teams playing a series of netball test matches at the West Regional Park Complex in Port of Spain in August 1979. Of the 19 teams who participated, ten were making their debuts at the event. This was the most teams to have made their debut at a single tournament.https://netball.sport/events-and-results/netball-world-cup/port-of-spain-1979/ Port of Spain 1979 - Netball World Cup World Netball 5 February 2026http://www.todor66.com/others/Netball/World/Women_1979.html Women Netball V World Championship 1979 www.todor66.com 5 January 2020 https://web.archive.org/web/20190403130648/http://todor66.com/others/Netball/World/Women_1979.html 3 April 2019 The tournament produced an historic, never-to-be-repeated result, with three teams sharing the title. In the 1st–10th classification stage, Australia, New Zealand and Trinidad and Tobago each won eight of their nine matches, each losing once to one of the other two first placed teams. New Zealand defeated Trinidad and Tobago 32–27, Trinidad and Tobago defeated Australia 40–38 and Australia defeated New Zealand 38–36. At the time, playoffs, goal difference or goal average were not used to determine an outright winner and the tournament organisers declared all three teams champions. This was Australia's 4th title, New Zealand's 2nd and Trinidad and Tobago's 1st. Trinidad and Tobago are the only team other than Australia and New Zealand to have won a Netball World Cup.https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/CHP19790827.2.161 Netball title tied The Press paperspast.natlib.govt.nz 27 August 1979 10 October 2026http://dropkicks.co.nz/research_we_does_it Research: We Does It! dropkicks.co.nz https://web.archive.org/web/20100523082728/http://dropkicks.co.nz/research_we_does_it 23 May 2010 5 November 2007 Teams, head coaches and captains Team Head coach Captain Antigua and Barbuda Australiahttps://s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/netball-wp-assets/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/05192322/WorldCup_History.pdf Australia at the Netball World Cup https://web.archive.org/web/20201026074707/https://s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/netball-wp-assets/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/05192322/WorldCup_History.pdf 26 October 2020 26 August 2020 Netball AustraliaWilma ShakespearMargaret Caldowhttps://diamonds.netball.com.au/player/margaret-caldow-oam-bem Margaret Caldow diamonds.netball.com.au https://web.archive.org/web/20220407170313/https://diamonds.netball.com.au/player/margaret-caldow-oam-bem 7 April 2022 1 October 2020 BahamasWinnifred RussellFlorence RolleBarbadosMaureen AlleyneMarva SealyBermudaMarva TrottJune DillCanadaAvis CollinsEnglandhttps://www.ournetballhistory.org.uk/content/events/world-cup/world-tournament-1979-trinidad 1979 5th World Netball Tournament, Trinidad www.ournetballhistory.org.uk 18 March 2020Joyce WheelerPatricia WatsonGrenadaJoline WhitemanJoan PivottRepublic of IrelandJoanne MolesJane DigbyJamaicaJo WigmanBrenda Khouri Kenya1 (Note 1)New Zealandhttps://www.silverferns.co.nz/images/silver-ferns/documents/2019_WC_Media_Guide_Digital_Version_LOW.pdf Vitality Netball World Cup Liverpool 2019 Media Guide www.silverferns.co.nz https://web.archive.org/web/20200209105237/https://www.silverferns.co.nz/images/silver-ferns/documents/2019_WC_Media_Guide_Digital_Version_LOW.pdf 9 February 2020 19 July 2019 17 September 2023Lois Muirhttps://www.silverferns.co.nz/silver-ferns/history/coaches/lois-muir.html Coaches – Lois Muir www.silverferns.co.nz 18 April 2022Lyn Gunsonhttps://www.silverferns.co.nz/silver-ferns/history/players/lyn-gunson.html Lyn Gunson www.silverferns.co.nz 31 March 2020Northern IrelandMaureen Mawhinneyhttps://newtownardschronicle.co.uk/ards-woman-inducted-into-netball-ni-hall-of-fame/ Ards woman inducted into Netball NI Hall of Fame newtownardschronicle.co.uk 18 December 2025 10 July 2025Sheelagh O'PreySaint Kitts and Nevis Rosemary McMasterLCA 1979Rumelia ElwinTheresa CharlesVCT 1979Gloria Ballantynehttps://www.caribbeanlife.com/gloria-ballantyne-a-stateswoman-extraordinaire/ www.caribbeanlife.com Gloria Ballantyne, a stateswoman extraordinaire 9 July 2019 6 March 2026Stella BoyeaScotlandMoira OrdMarie Fairie Trinidad and Tobagohttp://www.bestoftrinidad.com/netballers.html Netballers www.bestoftrinidad.com https://web.archive.org/web/20250315100116/http://www.bestoftrinidad.com/netballers.html 15 March 2025 5 February 2026Lystra LewisSherril PetersUgandahttps://www.observer.ug/sports/44-sports/3012-when-uganda-played-at-the-world-cup When Uganda played at the World Cup www.observer.ug https://web.archive.org/web/20230323175648/https://www.observer.ug/sports/44-sports/3012-when-uganda-played-at-the-world-cup 23 March 2023 20 April 2009 7 October 2024Ben Mary Muwangahttps://observer.ug/sports/44-sports/26875-meet-muwanga-the-she-cranes-greatest-coach Meet Muwanga: the She Cranes greatest coach www.observer.ug https://web.archive.org/web/20161110135518/https://observer.ug/sports/44-sports/26875-meet-muwanga-the-she-cranes-greatest-coach 10 November 2016 11 August 2013 7 October 2024Suzan Ddumba NamatovuWalesWendy Whitehttps://welsh-sports-hall-of-fame.wales/hall-of-fame/wendy-white/ Wendy White Welsh Sports Hall of Fame 24 January 2025 26 September 2025 Sources:https://www.ournetballhistory.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/WNC-Captains-and-Coaches-Sept-15.xls WNC Captains and Coaches from 1963 www.ournetballhistory.org.uk September 2015 18 December 2025 Milestones Trinidad and Tobago's Jean Pierre played at her 5th and final tournament, making her the only player to have played in the first five World Netball Tournaments.
