The team was coached by Bob Devaney and played their home games in Memorial Stadium in Lincoln. The Huskers went 11–0–1 to win their first national championship in school history. The Huskers started the season at No. 9 and tied No. 3 USC in Los Angeles in the second game of the season. After winning their next nine games, including all seven in the Big Eight, Nebraska was ranked No. 3 in the nation entering the Orange Bowl against No. 5 LSU of the SEC. Top-ranked Texas and No. 2 Ohio State both lost their bowl games earlier in the day and a 17–12 Nebraska victory that night in Miami gave the Cornhuskers their first national championship in school history. Through the 1973 season, the final UPI Coaches' Poll was released in early December, before the bowl games. In 1970 it picked Texas as national champion on December 8, before the Longhorns' 24–11 loss to Notre Dame in the Cotton Bowl in Dallas on New Year's Day. Notre Dame (10–1) finished second to Nebraska in the final AP Poll, released after the bowls in early January. The 1970 Cornhuskers championship season was notable for Devaney's rotation of two quarterbacks – Van Brownson and Jerry Tagge – in every game.https://newsok.com/article/2908342/famous-quarterback-rotations Famous quarterback rotations 20 August 2005https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/players/van-brownson-1.html Van Brownson College Statshttps://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/players/jerry-tagge-1.html Jerry Tagge College Stats President Richard Nixon honored Nebraska's 1970 national championship team and head coach Bob Devaney with the presentation of a presidential plaque (noting the team's No. 1 ranking in the final AP Poll and Orange Bowl victory) during a January 14, 1971, celebration at the Nebraska Coliseum.Nixon visit honored the Huskershttps://news.google.com/newspapers?id=LVozAAAAIBAJ&sjid=p-YFAAAAIBAJ&pg=3391%2C1751197 Lawrence Daily Journal-World Kansas Associated Press Nixon urging youth alliance January 15, 1971 1 Schedule 1970 AP Central September 12 1:30 pm w y 9 Wake Forest Memorial Stadium Lincoln, NE 36–12 66,103 https://www.newspapers.com/article/sioux-city-journal-huskers-toy-with-wake/139357009/ The Sioux City Sunday Journal Huskers toy with Wake September 13, 1970 January 22, 2024 Newspapers.com September 19 10:00 pm t y y 9 USC 3 Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum Los Angeles, CA 21–21 73,768 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-fresno-bee-huskers-battle-mighty-tro/183288841/ The Fresno Bee Huskers battle mighty Trojans to 21–21 tie September 20, 1970 October 19, 2025 Newspapers.com September 26 1:30 pm w y 8 Army Memorial Stadium Lincoln, NE 28–0 66,928 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-daily-nonpareil-huskers-blitz-army-b/182549784/ The Daily Nonpareil Huskers blitz Army by 28–0 September 27, 1970 October 19, 2025 Newspapers.com October 3 1:30 pm w y y 6 Minnesota Memorial Stadium Minneapolis, MN rivalry 35–10 52,287 https://www.newspapers.com/article/fort-worth-star-telegram-nebraska-topple/183306580/ Fort Worth Star-Telegram Nebraska topples Gophers October 4, 1970 October 19, 2025 Newspapers.com October 10 1:30 pm w 6 Missouri 16 Memorial Stadium Lincoln, NE rivalry 21–7 67,538 https://www.newspapers.com/article/oakland-tribune-cornhuskers-top-mizzou/183309135/ Oakland Tribune Cornhuskers top Mizzou October 11, 1970 October 19, 2025 Newspapers.com October 17 1:30 pm w y 5 Kansas Memorial Stadium Lawrence, KS rivalry 41–20 50,200 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-salina-journal-van-brownson-leads-hu/183309248/ The Salina Journal Van Brownson leads Huskers by KU, 41–20 October 18, 1970 October 19, 2025 Newspapers.com October 24 1:30 pm w 4 Oklahoma State Memorial Stadium Lincoln, NE 65–31 67,822 https://www.newspapers.com/article/star-herald-high-geared-huskers-shuck-ok/183309355/ Scottsbluff Star-Herald High-geared Huskers shuck Oklags 65–31 before 67,822 October 25, 1970 October 19, 2025 Newspapers.com October 31 1:50 pm w y 4 Colorado Folsom Field Boulder, CO rivalry ABC 29–13 50,881 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-kalamazoo-gazette-cornhuskers-top-co/183309451/ The Kalamazoo Gazette Cornhuskers top Colorado November 1, 1970 October 19, 2025 Newspapers.com November 7 1:30 pm w y 4 Iowa State Clyde Williams Field Ames, IA rivalry 54–29 36,000 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-commercial-appeal-orduna-ignites-cor/183309583/ The Commercial Appeal Orduna ignites Cornhuskers November 8, 1970 October 19, 2025 Newspapers.com November 14 1:30 pm w y 4 Kansas State 20 Memorial Stadium Lincoln, NE rivalry 51–13 67,894 https://www.newspapers.com/article/san-angelo-standard-times-cornhuskers-br/183309693/ San Angelo Standard-Times Cornhuskers breeze past outclassed Kansas State November 15, 1970 October 19, 2025 Newspapers.com November 21 1:30 pm w 3 Oklahoma Memorial Stadium Lincoln, NE rivalry 28–21 67,392 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-orlando-sentinel-nebraska-wraps-up-b/183309790/ The Orlando Sentinel Nebraska wraps up Big Eight November 22, 1970 October 19, 2025 Newspapers.com January 1, 1971, 1971 7:35 pm w y y 3 LSU 5 Miami Orange Bowl Miami, FL Orange Bowl NBC 17–12 80,699 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-austin-american-tagge-leads-nebraska/133871570/ The Austin American-Statesman Tagge leads Nebraska Number 1 crown claim January 2, 1971 October 22, 2023 Newspapers.com Schedule/Results (1970 Nebraska) https://stats.ncaa.org/teams/296635 National Collegiate Athletic Association NCAA Statistics October 19, 2025 Roster 1970 Football Roster https://huskers.com/sports/football/roster/1970 https://web.archive.org/web/20230607211919/https://huskers.com/sports/football/roster/1970 dead June 7, 2023 www.huskers.com 29 March 2022 Adkins, John #57 (Jr.) DE Anderson, Frosty #89 (So.) With over eight minutes remaining, Jerry Tagge jumped over the pile from the 1-yard line for the game's final points, and the Blackshirts held on the rest of the way to preserve the win. Top-ranked Texas and #2 Ohio State both lost their bowl games earlier in the day, which allowed the Huskers to claim their first national championship.
