An election for all 18 seats to Roscommon County Council took place on 23 May 2014 as part of the 2014 Irish local elections, a reduction from 26 seats at the 2009 election. County Roscommon was divided into three local electoral areas (LEAs) to elect councillors for a five-year term of office on the electoral system of proportional representation by means of the single transferable vote (PR-STV). In addition, the town council of Boyle was abolished.
Fine Gael lost 7 seats, including a number of long-serving councillors; due to voter anger over continuous boil water notices and the closure of the Accident and Emergency Department at Roscommon University Hospital; the latter leading to a split in the party locally. Fianna Fáil and Independents performed well in the election with the former becoming the largest party in Roscommon for the first time since 1985.https://www.irishtimes.com/news/politics/roscommon-profile-voters-boiling-angry-over-contaminated-water-1.1799197 Roscommon profile: Voters boiling angry over contaminated water Marese McDonagh 17 May 2014 The Irish TimesCiara McCaughey https://www.irishtimes.com/news/politics/roscommon-council-results-fine-gael-vote-implodes-in-the-three-electoral-areas-1.1808160 Roscommon Council results: Fine Gael vote implodes in the three electoral areas The Irish Times 26 May 2014 26 May 2014http://www.rte.ie/news/election2014/#/local/A24 Local Election: Roscommon County Council RTÉ dead https://web.archive.org/web/20140531170504/http://www.rte.ie/news/election2014/ 2014-05-31 http://elections.independent.ie/2014/local-election-2014/county/Roscommon https://archive.today/20140618103658/http://elections.independent.ie/2014/local-election-2014/county/Roscommon dead 2014-06-18 Roscommon Local Elections Irish Independent
