In the first day, Indonesia took a 3–1 lead against Thailand. In the second day of the competition, Indonesia lead 3–2 in the tie after Darmadi defeated Bandid Jaiyen in the first of three men's singles matches. Controversy arose in the second men's singles match when an incident similar to the final of the 1962 Asian Games men's team event happened on court. Indonesian singles player Muljadi, who was leading 7–5 against Thailand's Somsook Boonyasukhanonda protested against the umpire's line calls. Play was later resumed despite Muljadi's protest against the umpire. At 12–11 up, Muljadi was faulted for his serve and ended up losing the first game 15–12 to the Thai. In the second game, the Indonesian had already walked out of court.18 January 1970 Walkout by Indonesia over sideline decision https://eresources.nlb.gov.sg/newspapers/digitised/article/easternsun19700118-1.2.100.2 10 July 2024 Eastern Sun limited 11 en NewspaperSG As Boonyasukhanonda kept serving to an empty court for an 8–0 lead in the second game, the Thai umpire, Piensak Sosothikul awarded the Thais a walkover, with Thailand winning the tie against Indonesia.25 January 1970 Suharto gets report on walkout https://eresources.nlb.gov.sg/newspapers/digitised/article/straitstimes19700125-1.2.134 10 July 2024 The Straits Times limited 31 en NewspaperSG The Badminton Association of Indonesia later asked to resume the abandoned play with Thailand in a neutral country and chose Kyoto as the host ground.23 January 1970 SUDIRMAN OFF TO LONDON TO PLEAD https://eresources.nlb.gov.sg/newspapers/digitised/article/straitstimes19700123-1.2.125.10 10 July 2024 The Straits Times 27 en NewspaperSG While the Japan Badminton Association agreed to resume play, Thailand later refused to play.5 February 1970 Play in Kyoto, say Japan https://eresources.nlb.gov.sg/newspapers/digitised/article/straitstimes19700205-1.2.109.1 10 July 2024 The Straits Times 23 en NewspaperSG8 February 1970 Thomas Cup: Thais will say 'no' https://eresources.nlb.gov.sg/newspapers/digitised/article/straitstimes19700208-1.2.2 10 July 2024 The Straits Times 1 en NewspaperSG The president of the Badminton Association of Thailand later issued an official statement, stating that Thailand has already been declared winners of the semi-final tie under the rules of the IBF when Indonesia defaulted by walking out and resuming play in Japan would create a dangerous precedent.14 February 1970 Thailand send protest to the IBF https://eresources.nlb.gov.sg/newspapers/digitised/article/straitstimes19700214-1.2.163.1 10 July 2024 The Straits Times 23 en NewspaperSG The Thai association formally protested against the IBF ruling that Indonesia and Thailand should resume play in Kyoto. However, the IBF did not receive a letter from the Thai association regarding the refusal of play in Kyoto. On 16 February 1970, the IBF ruled in Indonesia's favor as the Indonesian team were given a 6–3 walkover against Thailand and were due to play Japan in the final of the Asian Zone. According to the president of the Badminton Association of Indonesia, Sudirman, this was due to the fact that the Badminton Association of Thailand failed to answer the decision that the tie should be resumed in Kyoto.21 February 1970 Indonesia's T-Cuppers https://eresources.nlb.gov.sg/newspapers/digitised/article/easternsun19700221-1.2.82.6 limited 10 July 2024 Eastern Sun 10 en NewspaperSG Final Indonesia Japan 1870 Kyoto, Japan 25–26 February 197026 February 1970 Indonesia Unggul 3-1 Atas Djepang Dihari Pertama https://opac.perpusnas.go.id/uploaded_files/dokumen_isi3/Terbitan%20Berkala/Q669_Harian_Kami_1970_02_26_001.pdf 10 July 2024 Harian Kami 1 id National Library of Indonesia27 February 1970 Japan's gallant fight fails https://eresources.nlb.gov.sg/newspapers/digitised/article/straitstimes19700227-1.2.109 10 July 2024 The Straits Times 26 en NewspaperSG 5 4 Rudy Hartono 15 15 Masao Akiyama 10 2 Muljadi 6 4 Ippei Kojima 15 15 Rudy Hartono Indratno 15 15 Junji Honma Eiichi Sakai 11 3 Indra Gunawan Muljadi 18 15 Masao Akiyama Ippei Kojima 14 6 Rudy Hartono 15 17 15 Ippei Kojima 6 18 1 Muljadi 4 17 10 Masao Akiyama 15 15 15 Darmadi 15 5 9 Junji Honma 7 15 15 Rudy Hartono Indratno 15 15 Masao Akiyama Ippei Kojima 12 10 Indra Gunawan Muljadi 15 3 6 Junji Honma Eiichi Sakai 4 15 15 American Zone Bracket main Bracket First round Semi-finals Final y MEX 1934 Bye 16 November 1969 – Lima USA 8 PER 1 CAN Bye JAM Bye 28 February 1970 – San Diego MEX 2 USA 7 January 1970 – Kingston CAN w/o JAM 21 March 1970 – Calgary USA 3 CAN 6 First round United States Peru Lima, Peru 16–17 November 1969Badminton U.S.A.
