ILEA control New body Labour Party (UK) The 1986 Inner London Education Authority election was held on 8 May in order to elect members to the Inner London Education Authority (ILEA). Before 1986, members of the ILEA had been co-opted mainly from the Greater London Council (GLC), but also co-opted from the boroughs and the City of London. The Greater London Council was abolished in 1986 at the time of the 1986 ILEA election. This was the only direct election to the ILEA, which was abolished in 1990. Context The ILEA had been established in 1965 to assume educational responsibilities for the area of the 12 boroughs and the City of London which formed the former London County Council.Grew Tony 2025-03-30 How London's boroughs were created 60 years ago https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c5y414n6790o 2026-07-31 BBC NewsSmith Stephen Watson Sheila 1988 Consequences of the Abolition of the Inner London Education Authority https://www.jstor.org/stable/24436343 Fiscal Studies 9 3 68–85 0143-5671 Originally, the ILEA was a special committee of the GLC.
