It is the only majority-Asian district in the United States. The incumbent was Democrat Colleen Hanabusa, who had represented the district since 2011. She was re-elected with 55% of the vote in 2012. The district had a PVI of D+18. On December 17, 2012, after the death of U.S. Senator Daniel Inouye, it was announced that he had sent a letter shortly before his death to the Governor of Hawaii, Neil Abercrombie, stating his desire that Hanabusa be appointed to his seat. Abercrombie decided against appointing Hanabusa and chose Lieutenant Governor of Hawaii Brian Schatz instead.https://www.politico.com/story/2012/12/hanabusa-seen-as-favorite-for-inouye-seat-85207.html?hp=l1 Colleen Hanabusa favorite for Daniel Inouye seat -
