These reforms dissolved 210 councils and removed 1600 elected councillors, creating 78 new councils through amalgamations. In suburban Melbourne, the number of municipalities was reduced from 53 to 26. Until the 1996 elections, all of the new LGAs were overseen by commissioners appointed by the state government.http://www.theage.com.au/articles/2004/04/24/1082719671977.html?from=storyrhs Kennett's blitz a decade on The Age Royce Millar Jason Dowling amp 25 April 2004 theage.com.au http://www.ausstats.abs.gov.au/ausstats/free.nsf/0/76E601D6DB55E88ACA25722500049195/$File/12570_1994-95.pdf Information Paper: Victorian Local Government Amalgamations 1994-95 : Changes to the Australian Standard Geographical Classification 1 August 1995 Australian Bureau of Statisticshttp://www.emelbourne.net.au/biogs/EM01028b.htm Municipal Government eMelbourne – The Encyclopedia of Melbourne Online www.emelbourne.net.au See also 1996 Melbourne City Council election References Category:Local elections in Victoria Victorian
