Results of the 19 July 1987 election of the 24 delegates from Portugal to the European Parliament Portuguese Electoral Commission http://eleicoes.cne.pt/cne2005/raster/index.cfm?dia=19&mes=07&ano=1987&eleicao=pe 30 November 2008 pt It was the election of all 24 MEPs representing the Portugal constituency for the remainder of the 1984–1989 term of the European Parliament. Portugal had acceded to the European Community on 1 January 1986 and had been represented in the European Parliament by 24 appointed delegates until elections could be held. These elections took place on the same day of the legislative elections of 1987. The Social Democrats (PSD) won the first European election by a landslide over the Socialists. The PSD won more than 37 percent of the votes, 15 points ahead of the PS. Note that a large chunk of the PSD vote in the 1987 legislative elections, held simultaneously with the European election, was from CDS voters that voted PSD in the general election and CDS in the EU elections, as CDS won 15 percent of the votes, compared with the 4 percent in the general election ballot. Together, the center-right parties won 53 percent of the votes. The Socialists, headed by former PM Maria de Lourdes Pintasilgo, suffered a heavy defeat, polling at just 22 percent, matching their legislative election score. The Communist/Green alliance, Democratic Unity Coalition, polled 4th place and won 11.5 percent of the votes. Finally, the Democratic Renewal Party (PRD), also suffered a very heavy defeat, winning just 4 percent of the votes and electing a sole member for the EU Parliament. Turnout in these elections was quite high, with 72.4 percent of voters casting a ballot. Electoral System The voting method used, for the election of European members of parliament, is by proportional representation using the d'Hondt method, which is known to benefit leading parties. In the 1987 EU election, Portugal had 24 seats to be filled. Deputies are elected in a single constituency, corresponding to the entire national territory. Parties and candidates The major parties that partook in the election, and their EP list leaders, were:Comissão Nacional de Eleições - Deputados Democratic Unity Coalition (CDU), Ângelo Veloso Socialist Party (PS), Maria de Lourdes Pintasilgo Democratic Renewal Party (PRD), José Medeiros Ferreira Social Democratic Party (PSD), Pedro Santana Lopes Democratic and Social Centre (CDS), Francisco Lucas Pires People's Monarchist Party (PPM), Miguel Esteves Cardoso Campaign period Party slogans Party or alliance Original slogan English translation Refs PSD « Juntos vamos ganhar » "Together we will win" Cavaco Silva condicionou a campanha de 1987, acusa Santana Lopes https://www.publico.pt/2019/05/01/politica/noticia/entrevista-europeias-cavaco-silva-condicionou-campanha-1987-santana-lopes-cvideo-audio-repeticao-1871098 1 May 2019 2 November 2024 Público pt PS « Portugal para todos » "Portugal for all" Campanha do PS https://arquivos.rtp.pt/conteudos/campanha-do-ps-3/ 9 July 1987 2 November 2024 RTP pt CDS « Na hora Europeia » "In European time" Pires, Francisco Lucas https://ephemerajpp.com/category/bio/pires-lucas/ 2 November 2024 Ephemera pt CDU « Para defender Portugal » "To defend Portugal" Eleições 87 – Parte III https://arquivos.rtp.pt/conteudos/eleicoes-87-parte-iii/ 19 July 1987 2 November 2024 RTP pt PRD « Mais Portugal » "More Portugal" Campanha do PRD https://arquivos.rtp.pt/conteudos/campanha-do-prd-3/ 11 July 1987 2 November 2024 RTP pt Results File:Portugal MEPS 1987.svg Party and European Parliament group LDR 2111828 10 SOC 1267672 6 EPP 868718 4 COM #8B0000 648700 3 EDAhttp://www.europe-politique.eu/elections-europeennes-portugal.htm Élections européennes Portugal 9 April 2014 Boissieu Laurent de Europe Politique fr 250158 1 NI 155990 0 NI 52835 0 NI 40812 0 NI 29009 0 NI 27678 0 NI 24060 0 NI 19475 0 5639650 68475 74240 0 7787603 Comissão Nacional de Eleições Social Democratic Party Socialist Party Democratic and Social Centre Unitary Democratic Coalition Democratic Renewal Party People's Monarchist Party Popular Democratic Union Christian Democratic Party Revolutionary Socialist Party Portuguese Democratic Movement Communist Party (Reconstructed) Portuguese Workers' Communist Party Vote share #ddd 550px 500px PSD Social Democratic Party (Portugal) 37.45 PS Socialist Party (Portugal) 22.48 CDS Democratic and Social Centre – People's Party 15.40 CDU Portuguese Communist Party 11.50 PRD green 4.44 PPM People's Monarchist Party (Portugal) 2.77 UDP Popular Democratic Union (Portugal) 0.92 PDC darkolivegreen 0.72 PSR Revolutionary Socialist Party (Portugal) 0.51 Others #777777 1.29 Blank/Invalid #DDDDDD 2.53 Seats #ddd 550px 500px PSD Social Democratic Party (Portugal) 41.67 PS Socialist Party (Portugal) 25.00 CDS Democratic and Social Centre – People's Party 16.67 CDU Portuguese Communist Party 12.50 PRD green 4.17 Distribution by European group + Summary of political group distribution in the 2nd European Parliament (1984–1989)http://www.historiaelectoral.com/europa3.html Elecciones al Parlamento Europeo: Resultados por países 1979 - 2014 historiaelectoral.com es 28 November 2017 Groups Parties Seats Total % Liberal Democrat and Reform Party (LDR) Social Democratic Party (PSD) 10 10 41.67 Socialist Group (SOC) Socialist Party (PS) 6 6 25.00 European People's Party (EPP) Democratic and Social Centre (CDS) 4 4 16.67 Communists and Allies (COM) Portuguese Communist Party (PCP) 3 3 12.50 European Democratic Alliance (EDA) Democratic Renewal Party (PRD) 1 1 4.17 Total 24 24 100.00 Maps See also Politics of Portugal List of political parties in Portugal Elections in Portugal European Parliament References 2 External links Comissão Nacional de Eleições Results according to the Portuguese Electoral Commission of the 19 July 1987 election of the 24 delegates from Portugal to the European Parliament Portugal Category:European Parliament elections in Portugal Category:1987 elections in Portugal Category:July 1987 in Europe
