Following promotion in their debut league season, the club competed in Division Three, as well as the League Cup, FA Cup and Welsh Cup. Summary Hereford enjoyed a steady start to the season and were as high as fifth in the table by the end of October. A sequence of only five wins between the beginning of November and the end of March checked their progress, but a nine-match unbeaten run pulled them clear of danger to an eventual 18th-place finish, eight points above the relegation zone. In the FA Cup, Hereford evoked memories of previous giant-killing exploits with a 2–1 replay win over West Ham United in the third round. Alan Jones struck the winning goal after a late Pat Holland equaliser had denied Hereford victory in the first match at Upton Park. The Cup run ended in the next round at the hands of Bristol City. On 26 September 1973, Brian Evans, a pre-season signing from Swansea City, became the first Hereford player to win an international cap when he featured in Wales' 3–0 defeat against Poland in a World Cup qualifier.Parrott 1998 21–25 Squad Players who made one appearance or more for Hereford United F.C. during the 1973-74 season Pos.Nat.NameLeagueLeague CupFA CupWelsh CupTotalAppsGoalsAppsGoalsAppsGoalsAppsGoalsAppsGoalsGKENGPeta Bala'c (on loan from Plymouth Argyle)2000001030GKSCOTommy Hughes430105000490GKENGFred Potter1000000010DFSCOGary Bell (on loan from Cardiff City)8000000080DFENGDavid Carver140100010160DFENGSteve Emery7000000070DFWALAlan Jones24(1)100421029(1)3DFWALMick McLaughlin430105000490DFENGKen Mallender26(1)100001027(1)1DFENGTommy Naylor364105110435DFENGBilly Tucker361101000381MFENGColin Addison7000200090MFWALBrian Evans30(1)810510036(1)9MFENGAlan Gane6(3)10000006(3)1MFENGHarry Gregory212002000232MFENGRon Radford333105000393MFENGDavid Rudge27(4)310401033(4)3MFENGColin Tavener222103010272MFENGPaul Taylor (on loan from York City)0(1)00000101(1)0MFENGDudley Tyler212004110263FWSCOWillie Brown (on loan from Newport County)9500000095FWENGJim Hinch22(5)700521028(5)9FWENGDavid Jenkins10(2)0100(1)01112(3)1FWENGPaul Lee12(4)200000012(4)2FWENGBrian Owen15(6)20(1)02(2)10017(9)3FWENGEric Redrobe21(4)5103(1)10025(5)6FWENGJohn Ritchie10(1)300000010(1)3 Parrott 1998 178-179Rothmans 1974-75 271–272 League table Third Division y HER Results Third Division 1973–74 Football League 1 25 August 1973 Grimsby Town 1–3 W Hereford United Chatterley 88 Tavener 73Tucker 77Evans 90 Blundell Park Cleethorpes 10,709 2 1 September 1973 Hereford United 1–0 W Blackburn Rovers Gregory 68 Edgar Street Hereford 9,483 3 8 September 1973 Charlton Athletic 2–0 L Hereford United Horsfield 60 73 The Valley London 5,640 4 11 September 1973 Bristol Rovers 1–1 D Hereford United Taylor 90 Redrobe 7 Eastville Bristol 12,620 5 15 September 1973 Hereford United 1–1 D Watford Evans 26 Lees 50 Edgar Street Hereford 8,634 6 19 September 1973 Hereford United 0–2 L Tranmere Rovers Young 52Loyden 90 Edgar Street Hereford 9,004 7 22 September 1973 Halifax Town 1–1 D Hereford United Gwyther 84 Mallender 7 The Shay Halifax 12,620 8 29 September 1973 Hereford United 2–0 W Wrexham Radford 39Redrobe 89 Edgar Street Hereford 8,245 9 6 October 1973 Port Vale 1–3 W Hereford United Woodward 58 Owen 56Evans 71Redrobe 85 Vale Park Stoke-on-Trent 5,802 10 8 October 1973 Tranmere Rovers 0–0 D Hereford United Prenton Park Birkenhead 5,943 11 13 October 1973 Hereford United 0–0 D Cambridge United Edgar Street Hereford 8,522 12 19 October 1973 Southend United 2–1 L Hereford United Albeson 45 pen.Brace 83 Gregory 68 Roots Hall Southend-on-Sea 6,083 13 24 October 1973 Hereford United 0–0 D Bristol Rovers Edgar Street Hereford 12,501 14 27 October 1973 Hereford United 3–0 W Brighton & Hove Albion Lee 27Evans 44Gane 90 Edgar Street Hereford 8,139 15 2 November 1973 Southport 1–1 D Hereford United Moore 83 Hinch 65 Haig Avenue Southport 2,549 16 10 November 1973 Hereford United 3–4 L Oldham Athletic Hinch 20 65Lee 35 Jones 11 14Blair 19Lochhead 21 Edgar Street Hereford 8,843 17 12 November 1973 York City 0–0 D Hereford United Bootham Crescent York 7,433 18 17 November 1973 Hereford United 0–1 L Huddersfield Town Gowling 30 Edgar Street Hereford 7,925 19 1 December 1973 Hereford United 3–1 W Walsall Tyler 36Hinch 43Evans 71 Andrews 81 Edgar Street Hereford 7,747 20 8 December 1973 Chesterfield 1–1 D Hereford United Phelan 67 Tiler 77 o.g.
