Elections to South Lanarkshire Council took place on 3 May 2012 on the same day as the 31 other Scottish local government elections. As with other Scottish council elections, it was held using single transferable vote (STV) – a form of proportional representation – in which multiple candidates are elected in each ward and voters rank candidates in order of preference. Labour retained their position as the largest party on the council as they gained three seats from 2007 but were one seat short of an overall majority. The Scottish National Party (SNP) also increased their representation and remained in second place on the authority after gaining four seats to hold 28. The Conservatives lost the majority of their seats as they fell from eight to three. One less independent candidate was elected with two returned and the remaining seat was won by the Liberal Democrats who lost one seat. Labour initially formed a minority administration to run the council before, in February 2013, they took overall control of South Lanarkshire Council after winning a by-election from the SNP.https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-scotland-scotland-politics-21473487 Labour wins South Lanarkshire Council majority BBC News February 15, 2013 www.bbc.co.uk Election result 2012 South Lanarkshire local election result Scottish Labour Party 33 4 1 3 49.3 43.2 39,892 3.6 Scottish National Party 28 4 0 4 41.7 36.4 33,596 7.2 Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party 3 0 5 5 4.5 10.8 10,015 2.1 Independent (politician) 2 1 2 1 3.0 3.0 2,734 2.2 Scottish Liberal Democrats 1 0 1 1 1.5 2.8 2,544 4.4 Scottish Green Party 0 0 0 0.0 1.4 1,326 1.3 East Kilbride Alliance 0 0 0 0.0 0.7 681 0.5 United Kingdom Independence Party 0 0 0 0.0 0.6 515 New Scottish Unionist Party (1986) 0 0 0 0.0 0.3 278 0.4 Scottish Christian Party 0 0 0 0.0 0.3 230 0.2 Christian Peoples Alliance 0 0 0 0.0 0.2 209 New Scottish Senior Citizens Unity Party 0 0 0 0.0 0.2 199 New Solidarity (Scotland) 0 0 0 0.0 0.2 166 67 92,385 Source: https://www.andrewteale.me.uk/leap/results/2012/440/ Local Elections Archive Project - 2017 - South Lanarkshire Andrew Teale 3 February 2023 Note: Votes are the sum of first preference votes across all council wards. The net gain/loss and percentage changes relate to the result of the previous Scottish local elections on 3 May 2007. This is because STV has an element of proportionality which is not present unless multiple seats are being elected. This may differ from other published sources showing gain/loss relative to seats held at the dissolution of Scotland's councils.https://ballotbox.scot/councils/stv-explained The Local STV Voting System Explained Allan Faulds Ballot Box Scotland 24 October 2022https://www.electoral-reform.org.uk/voting-systems/types-of-voting-system/single-transferable-vote/ Single Transferable Vote Electoral Reform Society 24 October 2022 Ward results Clydesdale West The SNP retained both the seats they had won at the previous election while Labour held their only seat and gained one seat from the Conservatives. main Clydesdale West Clydesdale West - 4 seats 9 Scottish Labour Party Eileen Logan (incumbent) 1,687 29.1                 Scottish National Party David Shearer (incumbent) 1,149 19.8 1,180               Scottish National Party Pat Leenote Clydesdale West councillor Pat Lee defected from the SNP and joined Solidarity on 27 May 2015.27 May 2015 Councillor Pat Lee joins Solidarity https://www.facebook.com/Solidarity.scot/posts/510357059113349 7 June 2021 Facebook 921 15.9 944 960 977 989 1,000 1,023 1,094 1,248 Scottish Labour Party Lynsey Hamilton 877 15.1 1,280               Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party Alex Allison (incumbent) 644 11.1 653 662 662 674 700 728 799   Independent (politician) Duncan McFarlane 246 4.3 258 269 269 284 317 353     Scottish Liberal Democrats Peter Charles Meehan 126 2.2 136 143 144 149 150       United Kingdom Independence Party Neil MacLeod 78 1.4 82 86 86 96         Scottish Christian Party Robin Mawhinney 65 1.1 69 74 74           9 14,923 5,793 92 1,159 38.8% Source:https://www.southlanarkshire.gov.uk/downloads/file/6429/declaration_and_election_result Local Government election results 2012 South Lanarkshire Council 4 May 2012 11 February 2023 Clydesdale North Labour and the SNP held the seats they had won at the previous election while independent candidate Ed Archer gained a seat from the Conservatives. main Clydesdale North Clydesdale North - 3 seats 6 Scottish Labour Party Catherine McClymont 1,253 27.5           Scottish National Party Vivienne Shaw 826 18.1 830 886 1,318     Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party Patrick Ross-Taylor (incumbent) 813 17.8 815 864 905 927   Independent (politician) Ed Archer 729 16.0 734 836 874 933 1,406 Scottish National Party George Sutherland (incumbent) 520 11.4 522 551       Scottish Labour Party Gordon Muir 418 9.2 511         6 11,747 4,559 92 1,140 38.8% Source:https://www.southlanarkshire.gov.uk/downloads/file/6429/declaration_and_election_result Local Government election results 2012 South Lanarkshire Council 4 May 2012 11 February 2023 Clydesdale East The SNP held the seat they had won at the previous election while the Conservatives held one of their two seats and Labour gained one seat from the Conservatives. main Clydesdale East Clydesdale East - 3 seats 6 Scottish National Party Bev Gauld (incumbent)note Clydesdale East SNP councillor Reverend Bev Gauld resigned from the party and became an independent in February 2014 after the party legalised same-sex marriage.12 February 2014 Councillor Bev Gauld resigns from SNP http://www.carlukegazette.co.uk/news/local-headlines/councillor-bev-gauld-resigns-from-snp-1-3303340 dead https://web.archive.org/web/20150923200534/http://www.carlukegazette.co.uk/news/local-headlines/councillor-bev-gauld-resigns-from-snp-1-3303340 23 September 2015 17 June 2021 Carluke Gazette 936 22.3 981 1,013 1,070     Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party Hamish Stewart (incumbent) 832 19.8 882 1,453       Scottish National Party Ian Donald McAllan 745 17.7 783 810 850 864   Scottish Labour Party Ralph Barker 727 17.3 794 824 876 877 1,120 Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party John McLatchie 692 16.5 713         Scottish Green Party Janet Moxley 268 6.4           6 9,815 4,200 65 1,051 42.8% Source:https://www.southlanarkshire.gov.uk/downloads/file/6429/declaration_and_election_result Local Government election results 2012 South Lanarkshire Council 4 May 2012 11 February 2023 Clydesdale South Labour (2) and the SNP (1) retained the seats they had won at the previous election. main Clydesdale South Clydesdale South - 3 seats 6 Scottish National Party Archie Manson (incumbent)note Clydesdale South SNP councillor Archie Manson resigned on 14 March 2014 on health grounds.
