The Scottish and English leagues were pre-eminent in the world at that time. However, it was the first ever game played between the respective champions of two different leagues. This was the only international competition Sunderland won; they subsequently participated in the British League Cup in 1902 and the Empire Exhibition Trophy in 1938 but exited early in those competitions.http://ryehillfootball.co.uk/stories/when-sunderland-afc-were-world-champions/ When Sunderland AFC Were World Champions! – Ryehill Football 2019-12-31 Participant teams TeamQualification ENG Sunderland1894–95 Football League First Division champions SCO 1542 Heart of Midlothian1894–95 Scottish Division One champions Match details 27 April 1895 1895 Football World Championship Heart of Midlothian SCO 1542 3–5 ENG SunderlandHearts 3 Sunderland 5 http://www.thestatcat.co.uk/Match.aspx?MatchID=5359&LU=S&LUID=16 The Stat Cat 2 May 2013 Taylor McLaren Johnston Campbell Millar Harvey Report 15,000 Mr Dickson, Scotland Tynecastle Park, Edinburgh, Scotland _old_laced 830000 830000 830000 ffffff 830000 Heart of Midlothian _red_stripes _red_stripes _red_stripes ffffff ffffff ffffff 777777 777777 Sunderland GK SCO 1542 Jock FairbairnDF SCO 1542 Barney BattlesDF SCO 1542 James MirkMF SCO 1542 Alexander HallMF SCO 1542 Bob McLarenMF SCO 1542 George HoggFW SCO 1542 Willie TaylorFW SCO 1542 Thomas ChambersFW SCO 1542 Willie MichaelFW SCO 1542 George Scott FW SCO 1542 Davie Baird GK SCO 1542 Ned Doig DF SCO 1542 Robert McNeillDF SCO 1542 Donald GowMF SCO 1542 Billy DunlopMF SCO 1542 John AuldMF SCO 1542 Harry JohnstonFW SCO 1542 Jimmy HannahFW SCO 1542 James GillespieFW SCO 1542 John HarveyFW SCO 1542 John CampbellFW SCO 1542 Jimmy Millar References Category:1894–95 in English football Category:1894–95 in Scottish football World Championship 1895 World Championship 1895 Category:April 1895 in the United Kingdom Category:Football matches in Edinburgh Category:1890s in Edinburgh Category:Football World Championship
