Format The knockout phase involved 32 teams: the 24 teams which qualified as winners and runners-up of each of the twelve groups in the group stage, and the eight third-placed teams from the Champions League group stage. Each tie in the knockout phase, apart from the final, was played over two legs, with each team playing one leg at home. The team that scored more goals on aggregate over the two legs advanced to the next round. If the aggregate score was level, the away goals rule would be applied, i.e. the team that scored more goals away from home over the two legs advanced. If away goals were also equal, then thirty minutes of extra time would be played. The away goals rule would be again applied after extra time, i.e. if there were goals scored during extra time and the aggregate score was still level, the visiting team would advance by virtue of more away goals scored. If no goals were scored during extra time, the tie would be decided by penalty shoot-out. In the final, which was played as a single match, if scores were level at the end of normal time, extra time would be played, followed by penalty shoot-out if scores remained tied. The mechanism of the draws for each round was as follows: In the draw for the round of 32, the twelve group winners and the four third-placed teams from the Champions League group stage with the better group records were seeded, and the twelve group runners-up and the other four third-placed teams from the Champions League group stage were unseeded. The seeded teams were drawn against the unseeded teams, with the seeded teams hosting the second leg. Teams from the same group or the same association could not be drawn against each other. In the draws for the round of 16 onwards, there were no seedings, and teams from the same group or the same association could be drawn against each other. On 17 July 2014, the UEFA emergency panel ruled that Ukrainian and Russian clubs would not be drawn against each other "until further notice" due to the political unrest between the countries.http://www.uefa.org/about-uefa/news/newsid=2124836.html Emergency Panel decisions UEFA.org 17 July 2014 Qualified teams Europa League group stage winners and runners-up GroupWinners(Seeded in round of 32 draw)Runners-up(Unseeded in round of 32 draw)ANOR MoldeTUR FenerbahçeBENG LiverpoolSUI SionCRUS KrasnodarGER Borussia DortmundDITA NapoliDEN MidtjyllandEAUT Rapid WienESP VillarrealFPOR BragaFRA MarseilleGITA LazioFRA Saint-ÉtienneHRUS Lokomotiv MoscowPOR Sporting CPISUI BaselITA FiorentinaJENG Tottenham HotspurBEL AnderlechtKGER Schalke 04CZE Sparta PragueLESP Athletic BilbaoGER FC Augsburg Champions League group stage third-placed teams main WDL 200 UEFA 1) Points; 2) Goal difference; 3) Goals scored; 4) Away goals scored; 5) Wins; 6) Away wins; 7) Disciplinary points; 8) Club coefficient.http://www.uefa.org/MultimediaFiles/Download/Regulations/uefaorg/Regulations/02/23/57/51/2235751_DOWNLOAD.pdf Regulations of the UEFA Champions League 2015/16 Season UEFA Union of European Football Associations 1 May 2015 GrG GrF GrB GrE GrD GrH GrC GrA complete 1 0 5 7 14 2 2 2 7 7 1 2 3 6 10 2 0 4 4 11 1 3 2 13 12 3 1 2 8 13 4 0 2 16 6 2 0 4 5 9 UKR Shakhtar Donetsk ENG Manchester United TUR Galatasaray ESP Sevilla GER Bayer Leverkusen GRE Olympiacos POR Porto ESP Valencia T A B C D E F G H Seeding S S S S N N N N green1 Seeded in round of 32 draw blue1 Unseeded in round of 32 draw Bracket numbered 2 1 40 20 y y y Round of 32 Round of 16 Quarter-finals Semi-finals Final ESP Villarreal 1 1 2 ITA Napoli 0 1 1 POR Sporting CP 0 1 1 GER Bayer Leverkusen 1 3 4 CZE Sparta Prague 1 3 4 RUS Krasnodar 0 0 0 TUR Galatasaray 1 1 2 ITA Lazio 1 3 4 GER Borussia Dortmund 2 1 3 POR Porto 0 0 0 ITA Fiorentina 1 0 1 ENG Tottenham Hotspur 1 3 4 GER FC Augsburg 0 0 0 ENG Liverpool 0 1 1 DEN Midtjylland 2 1 3 ENG Manchester United 1 5 6 TUR Fenerbahçe 2 1 3 RUS Lokomotiv Moscow 0 1 1 SUI Sion 1 2 3 POR Braga 2 2 4 UKR Shakhtar Donetsk 0 3 3 GER Schalke 04 0 0 0 BEL Anderlecht 1 2 3 GRE Olympiacos 0 1 1 FRA Marseille 0 1 1 ESP Athletic Bilbao 1 1 2 ESP Valencia 6 4 10 AUT Rapid Wien 0 0 0 FRA Saint-Étienne 3 1 4 SUI Basel (a) 2 2 4 ESP Sevilla 3 0 3 NOR Molde 0 1 1 ESP Villarreal 2 0 2 GER Bayer Leverkusen 0 0 0 CZE Sparta Prague 1 3 4 ITA Lazio 1 0 1 GER Borussia Dortmund 3 2 5 ENG Tottenham Hotspur 0 1 1 ENG Liverpool 2 1 3 ENG Manchester United 0 1 1 TUR Fenerbahçe 1 1 2 POR Braga 0 4 4 UKR Shakhtar Donetsk 3 1 4 BEL Anderlecht 1 0 1 ESP Athletic Bilbao (a) 1 1 2 ESP Valencia 0 2 2 SUI Basel 0 0 0 ESP Sevilla 0 3 3 ESP Villarreal 2 4 6 CZE Sparta Prague 1 2 3 GER Borussia Dortmund 1 3 4 ENG Liverpool 1 4 5 POR Braga 1 0 1 UKR Shakhtar Donetsk 2 4 6 ESP Athletic Bilbao 1 2 3 (4) ESP Sevilla 2 1 3 (5) ESP Villarreal 1 0 1 ENG Liverpool 0 3 3 UKR Shakhtar Donetsk 2 1 3 ESP Sevilla 2 3 5 18 May – Basel ENG Liverpool 1 ESP Sevilla 3 Round of 32 The draw was held on 14 December 2015.
