The Broncos competed in the Big Sky Conference and played their home games on campus at Bronco Stadium in Boise, Idaho. Led by first-year head coach Jim Criner, the Broncos were 5–5–1 overall and 2–4 in conference. Boise State entered the season as three-time defending Big Sky champions, but under a new head coach. After leading the Broncos for eight seasons, 61-year-old Tony Knap moved south to Nevada-Las Vegas in late January to replace Ron Meyer, who went to SMU in Dallas.https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=BrFfAAAAIBAJ&sjid=4jIMAAAAIBAJ&pg=5832%2C7927816 Lewiston Morning Tribune Idaho Associated Press Knap leaves Boise State for Las Vegas January 30, 1976 1B https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=qPMjAAAAIBAJ&sjid=b-0DAAAAIBAJ&pg=6848%2C5214520 Spokesman-Review Spokane, Washington Associated Press Boise's Knap off to Vegas January 30, 1976 17 Hired two weeks later in mid-February, Criner was previously the linebackers coach at UCLA under head coach Dick Vermeil; the Bruins were Pac-8 champions in 1975 and won the Rose Bowl,https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=2rBfAAAAIBAJ&sjid=-TIMAAAAIBAJ&pg=5948%2C3765764 Lewiston Morning Tribune Idaho Associated Press Boise St. hires UCLA grid assistant February 14, 1976 4Bhttps://news.google.com/newspapers?id=sPBLAAAAIBAJ&sjid=cO0DAAAAIBAJ&pg=2074%2C4967144 Spokesman-Review Spokane, Washington Associated Press Boise selects Criner; ISU elevates aide February 14, 1976 16https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=3bBfAAAAIBAJ&sjid=-TIMAAAAIBAJ&pg=4570%2C4912784 Lewiston Morning Tribune Idaho Associated Press BSU's Criner names aides February 17, 1976 2B a 23–10 upset of undefeated and top-ranked Ohio State.https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=fr4RAAAAIBAJ&sjid=dO0DAAAAIBAJ&pg=7125%2C444489 Spokesman-Review Spokane, Washington Associated Press Dynamite Bruins stagger Ohio St. January 2, 1976 16 Schedule 1976 NCAA Division II AP Mountain September 11 7:30 pm l Idaho Bronco Stadium Boise, ID rivalry 9–16 20,549 https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=oLESAAAAIBAJ&sjid=1vgDAAAAIBAJ&pg=3210%2C2220884 Spokane Daily Chronicle Washington Idaho team underdog against Boise squad September 10, 1976 23 https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=-XRhAAAAIBAJ&sjid=1vgDAAAAIBAJ&pg=6679%2C2416872 Spokane Daily Chronicle Washington Defense rated key for Idaho September 11, 1976 11https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=EiFOAAAAIBAJ&sjid=mu0DAAAAIBAJ&pg=4226%2C4483303 Spokesman-Review Spokane, Washington Payne Bob Vandals win opener September 12, 1976 D1 https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=o7ESAAAAIBAJ&sjid=1vgDAAAAIBAJ&pg=5496%2C2595048 Spokane Daily Chronicle Washington English Sue Vandals tame Broncos September 13, 1976 17 September 18 w y 1976 Augustana (South Dakota) Vikings Augustana (SD) Bronco Stadium Boise, ID 42–14 18,057 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-idaho-statesman-broncos-win-first-b/161150922/ The Idaho Statesman Broncos win first, bounce Augustana September 19, 1976 December 18, 2024 Newspapers.com September 25 w y Humboldt State Bronco Stadium Boise, ID 33–0 17,837 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-times-standard-boise-smothers-jacks/161150993/ The Times Standard Boise smothers 'Jacks September 26, 1976 December 18, 2024 Newspapers.com October 2 l y Montana State Reno H.
