1993 North Korean census December 31, 1993 2008 2008 North Korean census North Korea Central Bureau of Statistics 21,213,478 The 1993 North Korean census (1993년 조선민주주의인민공화국 인구일제조사) was a census conducted by the Central Bureau of Statistics of North Korea on 31 December 1993. It was the first census held in North Korea since the founding of the country in 1949, for which Beijing provided technical assistance to Pyongyang.http://www.lib.washington.edu/Msd/norestriction/b64084875.pdf Analysis of Democratic People's Republic of Korea 1993 Population Census Data and Population Projections Arjun Adlakha and Loraine West October 1997 US Bureau of the Census 2013-12-21 https://web.archive.org/web/20131224114134/http://www.lib.washington.edu/Msd/norestriction/b64084875.pdf 2013-12-24 dead The population of the country, according to this census, was 21,213,478, with a predominantly urban population, with the highest population density in the western and southwestern regions of Pyongyang, Nampo, South Hwanghae Province, and North Pyongan Province. The life expectancy at birth was of 70.7 years (67.8 for males and 73.9 for females). In addition, more than 11.8 million people in the country were in the labour force, an estimated 56% of the total population, and 691,027 were in the military, or 3.3% of the total population. Inconsistencies The census was inconsistent internally and in comparison to previous censuses. According to the American political economist, Nicholas Eberstadt: "Quotation marks should attend the '1993' census because that enumeration was not actually conducted in 1993, but rather in early 1994, with respondents replying to questions about their circumstances as of year-end 1993; needless to say, such a procedure is highly unorthodox."Eberstadt Nicholas The North Korean Economy: Between Crisis and Catastrophe https://books.google.com/books?id=eHQ3-Y9-AQYC&pg=PA18 2009 Transaction Publishers New Brunswick 978-1-4128-0947-4 18–19 Stats By province1993TotalMenWomanSex-ratioPyongyang2,741,2601,302,5981,438,66290.54South Pyongan Province2,866,1091,357,5651,508,54489.99North Pyongan Province2,404,4901,132,6791,271,81189.06Chagang Province1,152,733547,413605,32090.43South Hwanghae Province2,010,953942,7171,068,23688.25North Hwanghae Province1,512,060707,211804,84987.87Kangwon Province1,304,481608,921695,56087.54South Hamgyong Province2,732,2321,281,0011,451,23188.27North Hamgyong Province2,060,725975,5751,085,15089.90Ryanggang Province638,475303,319335,15690.50Kaesong334,433155,810178,62387.23Nampo731,448347,369384,07990.44Hyangsan32,95215,48517,46788.65Active Duty Military691,027 DPRK National 21,213,378 10,329,699 10,883,679 94.91 See also Demographics of North Korea 2008 North Korea Census References 1993 Census Category:December 1993 in Asia North Korea
