The election took place amid World War II, with neighbouring Denmark and Norway occupied by the Nazis. The major parties were all represented in the government cabinet. Some of the parties called for a postponement of the elections due to the war. However, Per Albin Hansson said that democratic processes ought to be respected. Ben Arneson characterized the election as a "gentleman's election" free of mudslinging.Arneson Ben A. 1941 The Recent Parliamentary Elections in Sweden https://www.cambridge.org/core/product/identifier/S0003055400239920/type/journal_article American Political Science Review en 35 1 107–108 10.2307/1947860 0003-0554 subscription Results Results of the 1940 Swedish general election File:Sweden_Riksdag_1940.svg Swedish Social Democratic Party 1546804 134 +22 National Organisation of the Right 518346 42 –2 Farmers' League 344345 28 –8 People's Party 344113 23 –4 Communist Party 101424 3 –2 Socialist Party 18430 0 –6 Left Socialist Party 898 0 New Other parties 57 0 0 14720 0 4110720 Nohlen & Stöver, SCB References Category:General elections in Sweden Sweden General Sweden
