1998–99 Swindon Town F.C. season

Season summary When the 1998–99 season kicked off, Swindon failed to win their first five games, scoring just three goals and the calls for McMahon's sacking began to be heard. Chairman Rikki Hunt and McMahon seemed united – McMahon saying he wouldn't resign, Hunt saying he wouldn't sack him. Two consecutive derby wins, against Bristol City and Oxford, only strengthened their position. This was followed by a 5–2 defeat at Portsmouth – and when Watford then won 4–1 at the County Ground, the fans held an on-pitch protest, sitting in the centre circle at the end of the match, demonstrating that both McMahon and Hunt should resign. McMahon left the club "by mutual consent".McMahon walks out on Swindon https://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/sport/football/178457.stm BBC Sport 23 September 1998 14 March 2014 Jimmy Quinn was appointed as McMahon's replacement and managed to keep Swindon in the division with the club finishing the season in 17th place.Quinn takes Robins' perch https://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/sport/football/184969.stm BBC Sport 2 October 1998 14 March 2014 Final league table 1998–99 Football League#First Division First Division y SWI Results Swindon Town's score comes firsthttp://www.statto.com/football/teams/swindon-town/1998-1999/results Swindon Town 1998-1999 Results - statto.com 14 March 2014 14 March 2014 https://web.archive.org/web/20140314150709/http://www.statto.com/football/teams/swindon-town/1998-1999/results live Legend WinDrawLoss Football League First Division DateOpponentVenueResultAttendanceScorers 8 August 1998 Sheffield UnitedA1–215,937Holdsworth (own goal) 15 August 1998 SunderlandH1–110,207Onoura 22 August 1998 Wolverhampton WanderersA0–121,537 29 August 1998 Port ValeH1–17,800Hall 31 August 1998 BuryA0–34,513 5 September 1998 Bristol CityH3–28,537Walters, Ndah, Onoura 9 September 1998 Oxford UnitedH4–18,305Ndah (2), Onoura (2) 12 September 1998 PortsmouthA2–510,105Onoura, Ndah 19 September 1998 WatfordH1–48,781Ndah 25 September 1998 Tranmere RoversA0–05,501 29 September 1998 Bolton WanderersA1–216,497Onoura 3 October 1998 Stockport CountyH2–37,961Onoura, Walters 9 October 1998 Huddersfield TownH3–08,316Onoura, Walters, Bullock 17 October 1998 Ipswich TownA0–113,212 20 October 1998 Birmingham CityA1–119,485Gooden 24 October 1998 West Bromwich AlbionH2–28,967Hall, Walters 31 October 1998 Queens Park RangersH3–18,500Walters (2), Onoura 7 November 1998 Crewe AlexandraA2–04,469Onoura (2) 14 November 1998 Bradford CityA0–314,897 21 November 1998 Crystal PalaceH2–011,718Walters, Ndah 28 November 1998 Grimsby TownA0–18,657 5 December 1998 Norwich CityH1–19,262Walters 12 December 1998 Bradford CityH1–47,447Onoura 19 December 1998 BarnsleyA3–115,342Onoura (2), Hay 26 December 1998 Wolverhampton WanderersH1–011,627Onoura 28 December 1998 Bristol CityA1–316,257Ndah 9 January 1999 Sheffield UnitedH2–27,583Ndah, Onoura 16 January 1999 Port ValeA1–05,405Ndah 30 January 1999 BuryH1–17,797West (own goal) 6 February 1999 SunderlandA0–241,304 13 February 1999 Oxford UnitedA0–28,179 20 February 1999 PortsmouthH3–310,110Hay (2), Onoura 26 February 1999 WatfordA1–08,692Howe 3 March 1999 Tranmere RoversH2–35,726Ndah, Reeves 6 March 1999 Bolton WanderersH3–38,392Howe, Hay, Walters 9 March 1999 Stockport CountyA1–26,098Walters 13 March 1999 Crewe AlexandraH1–27,434Hay 20 March 1999 Queens Park RangersA0–411,184 3 April 1999 Ipswich TownH0–610,337 5 April 1999 Huddersfield TownA2–111,719Howe, Hay 10 April 1999 Birmingham CityH0–18,896 13 April 1999 West Bromwich AlbionA1–19,601Ndah 17 April 1999 Crystal PalaceA1–018,660Onoura 24 April 1999 Grimsby TownH2–07,197Onoura, Ndah 1 May 1999 Norwich CityA1–217,307Onoura 9 May 1999 BarnsleyH1–38,182Griffin FA Cup 1998–99 FA Cup +RoundDateOpponentVenueResultAttendanceGoalscorersR32 January 1999 BarnsleyH0–08,016R3R19 January 1999 BarnsleyA1–310,510Walters League Cup 1998–99 Football League Cup +RoundDateOpponentVenueResultAttendanceGoalscorersR1 1st Leg12 August 1998 Wycombe WanderersH2–14,682Reeves, NdahR1 2nd Leg18 August 1998 Wycombe WanderersA0–2 (lost 2–3 on agg)2,478 Squad http://www.11v11.com/teams/swindon-town/tab/players/season/1999 All Swindon Town players: 1999 - AUS GK Frank Talia - ENG DF Brian Borrows - ENG DF Gareth Hall - ENG DF Mark Robinson - ENG DF Alan Reeves - ENG MF Ty Gooden - ENG MF Mark Walters - SCO MF Scott Leitch - ENG MF Bobby Howe - SCO FW Iffy Onoura - ENG FW George Ndah - SCO FW Chris Hay - ENG DF Sol Davis - ENG MF Darren Bullock - ENG GK Jimmy Glass - ENG DF Craig Taylor - ENG DF David Kerslake - ENG DF Adam Willis - ENG MF Kevin Watson - ENG MF Robin Hulbert - ENG DF Des Linton on loan from Peterborough United - ENG FW Shayne Bradley on loan from Southampton - ENG DF Gareth Davies - FRA MF Philippe Cuervo - ENG FW Steve Cowe - SCO MF Lee Collins - ENG FW Charlie Griffin - ENG DF Jimmy Williams - ENG MF Frazer McHugh - ENG DF Sam Campagna - NIR MF Paul McAreavey - ENG GK Steve Mildenhall - ENG MF Peter Holcroft - ENG MF Jamie Mills Left club during the season - IRL FW Neale Fenn on loan from Tottenham Hotspur - ENG MF Darren Bullock to Bury - ENG DF Phil King to Brighton & Hove Albion References Category:Swindon Town F.C. seasons Swindon Town
