International men's tennis competition 1989 Davis Cup 3 February – 17 December 1989 78th 79 FRG 1988 1990 The 1989 Davis Cup (also known as the 1989 Davis Cup by NEC for sponsorship purposes) was the 78th edition of the Davis Cup, the most important tournament between national teams in men's tennis. This year's tournament saw the expansion of the previous World Group Relegation Play-offs round into the World Group qualifying round; instead of advancing directly to the World Group, the Zonal Group I winners would now join the World Group first round losers for a chance to compete in the following year's World Group. This year also marked the introduction of the tiebreak, played at 6–6 in all sets except for the final set. 79 teams would enter the competition, 16 in the World Group, 14 in the Americas Zone, 19 in the Asia/Oceania Zone, and 30 in the Europe/Africa Zone. The Bahamas, Bahrain, the Dominican Republic, Kuwait and Jordan made their first appearances in the tournament. West Germany defeated Sweden in the final, held at the Schleyer-Halle in Stuttgart, West Germany, on 15–17 December, to win their second consecutive Davis Cup title.Bud Collins The Bud Collins History of Tennis 2010 New Chapter Press [New York] 978-0942257700 495–496, 499 2nd World Group 1989 Davis Cup World Group Participating teamsAUSAUTTCHDENFRAINAISRITAMEXPAR 1988URSESPSWEUSAFRGYUG Draw y 3–5 February 7–9 April 21–23 July 15–17 December Malmö, Sweden (indoor carpet) SWE 4 ITA 1 Vienna, Austria (indoor clay) AUS 0 AUT 5 Belgrade, Yugoslavia (indoor clay) YUG 4 DEN 1 Marbella, Spain (clay) ESP 3 MEX 2 Fort Myers, Florida, United States (hard) PAR 0 USA 5 Tel Aviv, Israel (indoor carpet) ISR 1 FRA 4 Prague, Czechoslovakia (indoor carpet) URS 1 TCH 4 Karlsruhe, West Germany (indoor carpet) INA 0 FRG 5 Vienna, Austria (indoor clay) SWE 3 AUT 2 Split, Yugoslavia (indoor carpet) YUG 4 ESP 1 San Diego, United States (indoor carpet) USA 5 FRA 0 Prague, Czechoslovakia (indoor carpet) TCH 2 FRG 3 Båstad, Sweden (clay) SWE 4 YUG 1 Munich, West Germany (indoor carpet) USA 2 FRG 3 Stuttgart, West Germany (indoor carpet) SWE 2 FRG 3 Final West Germany vs. Sweden West Germany Sweden Schleyer-Halle, Stuttgart, West Germanyhttps://www.daviscup.com/en/draws-results/tie.aspx?id=M-DC-1989-WG-M-SWE-FRG-01 West Germany v Sweden daviscup.com 15–17 December 1989 Carpet (indoors) 3 2 Carl-Uwe Steeb 7 6 7 2 3 Mats Wilander 5 7 6.035 6 6 Boris Becker 6 6 6 Stefan Edberg 2 2 4 Boris Becker Eric Jelen 7 6 3 6.035 6 Jan Gunnarsson Anders Järryd 6.055 4 6 7 4 Boris Becker 6 6 6 Mats Wilander 2 0 2 Carl-Uwe Steeb 2 4 Stefan Edberg 6 6 World Group qualifying round 1989 Davis Cup World Group qualifying round Date: 20–24 July The eight losing teams in the World Group first round ties and eight winners of the Zonal Group I final round ties competed in the World Group qualifying round for spots in the 1990 World Group.
