PSV won 6–5 on penalties after a goalless draw after extra time. The match was played at Neckarstadion, Stuttgart, on 25 May 1988. According to PSV player Berry van Aerle, it was not a particularly good match, with both teams very cautious. However, it was exciting until the end and concluded in a tense penalty shoot-out. For PSV, this win secured a treble of the Dutch Cup, the Dutch Championship and the European Cup. Five members of the PSV side were also part of the Netherlands team that went on to win UEFA Euro 1988 in West Germany that summer.Van Aerle relives PSV glory night against Benfica https://www.uefa.com/uefaeuropaleague/news/01f0-0e77aacb13d6-a70b348021f6-1000--van-aerle-relives-psv-glory-night-against-benfica/ UEFA Union of European Football Associations 4 April 2011 20 May 2016 Route to the final 1987–88 European Cup NED PSV EindhovenRoundPOR BenficaOpponentAgg.1st leg2nd legOpponentAgg.1st leg2nd legTUR Galatasaray3–23–0 (H)0–2 (A)First roundALB 1946 Partizani Tirana4–04–0 (H)w/o (A)AUT Rapid Wien4–12–1 (A)2–0 (H)Second roundDEN AGF1–00–0 (A)1–0 (H)FRA 1974 Girondins de Bordeaux1–1 (a)1–1 (A)0–0 (H)Quarter-finalsBEL Anderlecht2–12–0 (H)0–1 (A)ESP Real Madrid1–1 (a)1–1 (A)0–0 (H)Semi-finalsROU 1965 Steaua București2–00–0 (A)2–0 (H) Match thumb|Willy van de Kerkhof (left) and Hans van Breukelen (who saved the decisive penalty) celebrating the title Details 25 May 1988 20:15 CEST PSV Eindhoven NED 0–0 yes https://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsleague/season=1987/matches/round=25/match=4086/index.html POR Benfica Neckarstadion, Stuttgart 64,000 Luigi Agnolin (Italy) Koeman Kieft Nielsen Vanenburg Lerby Janssen 6–5 Elzo Dito Redouane Pacheco Mozer Veloso _psv1988 _psv1988 _psv1988 _psv1988 _psv1988 FFFFFF FFFFFF FFFFFF FFFFFF FFFFFF PSV Eindhoven _shoulder_stripes_white_stripes _3_stripes_vneck_white _shoulder_stripes_white_stripes _3_stripes_white _adidaswhite DD0000 DD0000 DD0000 DD0000 DD0000 Benfica GK 1 NED Hans van BreukelenRB 2 BEL Eric Gerets (c)CB 3 DEN Ivan NielsenCB 4 NED Ronald KoemanLB 5 DEN Jan HeintzeCM 6 DEN Søren Lerby 106LM 7 NED Berry van AerleRM 8 NED Gerald VanenburgCM 9 NED Edward LinskensCF 10NED Wim KieftCF 11NED Hans Gillhaus 105+2Substitutes:DF 12NED Adick KootFW 13NED Eric ViscaalMF 14NED Anton Janssen 105+2MF 15NED Willy van de KerkhofGK 16NED Patrick LodewijksManager:NED Guus Hiddink300px GK 1 POR SilvinoRB 2 POR António VelosoCB 3 POR DitoLB 4 POR ÁlvaroCB 5 BRA 1968 Carlos MozerCM 6 BRA 1968 ElzoRM 7 BRA 1968 Chiquinho CarlosLM 8 POR António PachecoCF 9 POR Rui Águas 56CM 10POR Shéu (c)CF 11SWE Mats Magnusson 112Substitutes:GK 12POR Manuel BentoDF 13POR SamuelMF 14POR Adelino NunesFW 15MAR Hajry Redouane 112FW 16BRA 1968 Wando 56Manager:POR Toni See also 1987–88 PSV Eindhoven season 1987–88 S.L.
