Taj Mahal Palace Hotel
thumb|Taj Hotel, with the Tower on the right, barricaded days after the attack.
The 565 room five-star Taj hotel consists of two main buildings, the six-story Palace and the 20-story Tower. Additionally, there are a large number of non-residential rooms including restaurants, kitchens and stores. When the terrorists entered the Taj, more than 500 staff and 1200 guests and diners were present. CCTV recordings showed two terrorists entering the hotel at 21:44.Different reports place the time between 21:25 and 22:30. At 21:54 hours firing at the Taj was reported at the police control room. Ten minutes later they were joined by the two terrorists who had attacked the Leopold Café. After shooting anything that moved in the lobby, the terrorists moved to upper floors.
For the first two hours, apart from the unarmed hotel security, only six policemen were present in the hotel. Vishwas Nangare Patil, a deputy commissioner of police (DCP) along with the hotel's security chief were among the first to make contact with the terrorists. DCP Nangre-Patil fired his Glock at two of the terrorists and missed. The terrorists returned gunfire. Nangre-Patil realised he was outgunned and focused on evacuation of guests on the ground floor while the terrorists moved to other floors. Hundreds of guests hiding in ground floor shops and restaurants were evacuated. Other hotel staff, including chefs and waiters, did what they could to assist the guests, including guiding them to supposedly safer areas of the hotel. Guests were either in their rooms or in areas such as the hotel's private invitation only club, where 250 people were crowded. Elsewhere there was a Korean delegation of a hundred, the board of Hindustan Unilever, and a wedding reception. Among the guests were the wife of the Taj Group's CEO, South African commandos and a US Marine captain. All the while, the terrorists were being guided and motivated by handlers. In real time, the technical section of the Mumbai Police ATS was listening in to these conversations and passing on actionable intel. The hotel's sniffer dog team had been killed. During this firing a ricochetting bullet hit the leg of one of the terrorists. During another gunfight, two State Reserve Police Force personnel were hit by shrapnel. Between them, the terrorists had forty kilograms of RDX, which was used by them to create a number of explosions.http://ibnlive.in.com/news/taj-hotel-burns-2-terrorists-killed/79137-3.html Taj Hotel Burns, 2 Terrorists Killed 27 November 2008 CNN-IBN 27 November 2008 dead https://web.archive.org/web/20110824211653/http://ibnlive.in.com/news/taj-hotel-burns-2-terrorists-killed/79137-3.html 24 August 2011 In one instance the terrorists planted a bomb on the fifth floor below the central dome. Its explosion caused structural damages.
Then commissioner of police Hasan Gafoor ordered police personnel to take no action inside the hotel and to wait for the NSG to arrive. Now in the hotel's CCTV room, the DCP, other police personnel, and hotel security observed the terrorists moving on the fifth and sixth floors. The handlers reminded the terrorists to shoot the CCTV cameras. Chaitlall Gunness, CEO of the State Bank of Mauritius, was killed at the entrance of room 551 at around 22:30 when he answered the doorbell. Three hours into the attack the terrorists were still moving about freely on the upper floors. They had shifted five hostages to a single room. However, the handlers told them to keep moving and split the hostages into two groups.
Indian Navy special operations force MARCOS had been mobilized from a nearby base. Even though they were already in the hotel before the NSG, they were considered the wrong force for the job. From a total strength of 1000, 8 marine commandos arrived at 2 a.m. and another 16 at around 5 a.m. The terrorists would also go on to light enough fires so as to make it on to the news, which the handlers confirmed. Huge plumes of smoke also caused the death of some guests. Fire fighters doused the flames and helped evacuate guests from windows. 200 guests and staff were rescued from windows using ladders during the first night. In Pics: facts, twists, turns about Kasab trial https://www.news18.com/photogallery/india/in-pics-facts-twists-turns-about-kasab-trial-768419-12.html 26 November 2021 News18 26 November 2021 https://web.archive.org/web/20211126134554/https://www.news18.com/photogallery/india/in-pics-facts-twists-turns-about-kasab-trial-768419-12.html live 26 February 2015 By 27th, 8 a.m., one flight with NSG commandos had arrived in Mumbai. These 120 commandos were split between the three locations Trident, Taj, and Chabad House. The Taj task force consisted of weapons experts, explosive experts, medics and a communications team.
NSG started clearing the Tower starting from the top. Two other teams would start with the Palace. While the Tower was given the clear, a team in the Palace made contact with the terrorists. The team had spotted several figures going into a room on the fourth floor. The door was blasted only to find that a mattress had been placed against it, absorbing the blast. As they attempted to enter an attacker came out with a guest in front of them. The terrorists flung a grenade causing injuries to three commandos and the NSG team withdrew. By 16:00 on the 28th, three flights with NSG commandos had reached Mumbai. Over a hundred commandos were in the Taj. On the 29th at 4 a.m., explosive experts began creating two bombs. Some of the material needed for these was bought by Mumbai Police from local shops; they were back in an hour, and soon two bombs were built. The explosion created by these two bombs resulted in the death of the four terrorists. Mop-up operations took another eight hours.thumb|upright|left|The first floor of the Taj Hotel was completely gutted.
CNN initially reported on the morning of 27 November 2008 that the hostage situation at the Taj Hotel had been resolved and quoted the police chief of Maharashtra, stating that all hostages were freed; however, later news reports indicated that attackers were still in the Taj, with explosions heard and gunfire exchanged.http://www.ndtv.com/convergence/ndtv/mumbaiterrorstrike/Election_Story.aspx?ID=NEWEN20080074405&type=News Gunbattle enters third day, intense firing at Taj hotel 28 November 2008 NDTV 28 November 2008 https://web.archive.org/web/20081201002326/http://www.ndtv.com/convergence/ndtv/mumbaiterrorstrike/Election_Story.aspx?ID=NEWEN20080074405&type=News 1 December 2008 deadhttp://edition.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/asiapcf/11/27/india.attacks/index.html Fighting reported at Mumbai Jewish center Andrew Stevens Mallika Kapur Phil O'Sullivan Phillip Turner Ravi Hiranand Yasmin Wong Harmeet Shah Singh 27 November 2008 CNN 28 November 2008 https://web.archive.org/web/20081202132254/http://edition.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/asiapcf/11/27/india.attacks/index.html 2 December 2008 livehttp://www.iht.com/articles/2008/11/28/news/29MUMBAI.php Indian forces battle pockets of militants Keith Bradsher Somini Sengupta 28 November 2008 International Herald Tribune 28 November 2008 https://web.archive.org/web/20081201083533/http://www.iht.com/articles/2008/11/28/news/29MUMBAI.php 1 December 2008 dead

The Oberoi and Trident hotels are a luxury hotel complex having over 800 rooms. The attack started on 26 November between 21:35 and 22:20. Before entering the hotel, a pair of terrorists placed an IED at the entrance of the hotel. This IED exploded at 22:15. After firing at guests in the lobby and in one of the restaurants they placed another IED there as well. This IED exploded at 22:30. The attackers then moved upwards through the 33 floor Trident Hotel taking hostages as they progressed. The modus operandi followed was similar to the attack taking place at the Taj.
The first call to the police was at 21:51. Within minutes police personnel reached the hotel. An outer cordon was established and some civilians were rescued. While at this stage there was a confrontation between the terrorists and the police, the outgunned police backed away. Eight marine commandos arrived at around 02:00 on the 27th and engaged the terrorists however heavy gunfire and grenades limited their progress. NSG commandos reached the hotel at 07:00 on the 27th. At 11:00 they began operations. Rooms were entered using a master key and searched one by one.Accounts vary between whether the security forces took a bottom-to-top or top-to-bottom approach. They came across the attackers on reaching the 18th floor of the hotel at 17:30. Operations continued into the 28th when the attackers were killed at around 15:00. Four commandos were injured, out of which two were seriously injured.

A cook had also managed to escape. The three had been taken to a nearby police station. The NSG weren't aware of this. By 18:00 NSG had set up an inner cordon and placed its snipers. It was getting dark and the NSG had no night vision equipment. However at 21:30 electricity to the building was cut and a probe team attempted entry. A grenade was thrown from inside causing the NSG probe team to withdraw.
At around 22:00 Indian intelligence intercepted a call between the terrorists at Nariman and their handlers regarding killing the hostages. NSG was informed about the death of the hostages only after a delay. The mission had now changed from hostage rescue to seek and destroy. During this time more than 60 civilians were shifted from surrounding buildings. It was now 01:00 on the 28th when the civilian evacuation was considered complete. The NSG realised that the police may have initially made an overestimate with regard to the number of terrorists. The terrorists continued firing single shots throughout the night, changing positions as they did so.thumb|NSG Commandos beginning the assault on Nariman House by fast-roping onto the terrace. It was decided to enter the building at dawn from the roof. Commandos were positioned on an adjacent building with a commanding view of the drop off point. There were two 84mm Carl Gustav rocket launchers incase the terrorists attacked the helicopter. Three AK47s were borrowed from Mumbai Police for these commandos. The gloves for fast-roping could not be found so makeshift gloves had to be made. At 07:05 the helicopter arrived with 20 commandos with MP5s. Hundreds of locals and television crews crowded to view the spectacle. Live telecast of the helicopter and the commandos helped the handlers provide information to the terrorists. The terrorists prepared themselves on the fourth floor of the five story building by shifting around objects to make makeshift pillbox shaped structures.
The commandos clear the fifth floor, still making sure there were no civilians. The door to the fourth floor was closed which was breached using an explosive charge. The first commando to enter, Gajender Singh Bisht,https://www.pib.gov.in/newsite/PrintRelease.aspx?relid=46980®=48&lang=2 14 September 2014 25 January 2009 Ashoka Chakra awardees and their saga of gallantry Press Information Bureau, Government of India was shot by a terrorist, and brief gunfire was exchanged. A grenade thrown by the terrorists injured two commandos. Retrieving the body of Bisht became a priority. To this end the officer incharge ordered all surrounding units to fire; tear gas canisters are also thrown in. During this firing one of the terrorists was injured. Intercepted communication between the terrorist and his handler also conveys the same.
A new entry to the fourth floor was needed. It is decided to use 2kg PEK explosive. At 17:00 on the 28th the explosive creates a hole in a wall, stunning the terrorists. The attackers used a satellite phone and cell phones to talk to each other, as well as their handlers who were based in Pakistan. In transcripts intercepted by Indian authorities between the attackers and their handlers, the handlers provided the attackers with encouragement, tactical advice, and information gained from media coverage. The attackers used both personal cell phones and those obtained from their victims to communicate with each other and the news media. Although the attackers were encouraged to murder hostages, the attackers were in communication with the news media via cell phones to make demands in return for the release of hostages. This was believed to be done to further confuse Indian authorities that they were dealing with primarily a hostage situation.https://www.rand.org/content/dam/rand/pubs/occasional_papers/2009/RAND_OP249.pdf Angel Rabasa Robert D. Aftermath
Aftermath of the 2008 Mumbai attacks
The attacks are sometimes referred to in India as "26/11", after the date in 2008 that the attacks began. The Pradhan Inquiry Commission, appointed by the Maharashtra government, produced a report that was tabled before the legislative assembly more than a year after the events. The report said the "war-like" attack was beyond the capacity to respond of any police force, but also found fault with the Mumbai Police Commissioner Hasan Gafoor's lack of leadership during the crisis.https://www.thehindu.com/news/national/other-states/Pradhan-Committee-finds-serious-lapses-on-Gafoorrsquos-part/article16854533.ece Pradhan Committee finds serious lapses on Gafoor's part Press Trust of India 21 December 2009 The Hindu Chennai 15 July 2011 "There was absence of overt leadership on the part of Hasan Gafoor, the CP, and lack of visible Command and Control at the CP's office," said the report prepared by former Governor and Union Home Secretary R.D. Black Tornado: The Three Sieges of Mumbai 26/11 (2016), non-fiction book by Indian journalist Sandeep Unnnithan presenting a blow-by-blow account of the terrorist attack and how it was thwarted by India's security forces including the efforts of the Indian Navy's Marine Commandos as well as an ill-equipped yet valiant Mumbai Police. Its primary focus is on the 51 Special Action Group of National Security Guard, commanded by the decorated Indian Army Special Forces officer Brigadier Sunil Sheoran. The book delves into the reasons for the delayed arrival of the NSG, including home minister Shivraj Patil wanting to fly in the NSG aircraft and coming an hour late to board the plane which inturn delayed the NSG's arrival into the city and Southern Army Commander Lt. General. Noble Thamburaj touring the Taj Mahal Hotel with his wife while the NSG operation was still on. Let Me Say It Now (2020), memoir by Indian police officer Rakesh Maria who was given the responsibility of investigating the attacks and personally interrogated Ajmal Kasab. He revealed the extent to which terrorists had gone to ensure their bodies would be mis-identified as Hindus, to lend credence to the conspiracy theory that the attack was the handiwork of Hindu extremists, and thus provide the Pakistani authorities with plausible deniability. According to Maria, Lashkar-e-Taiba wanted Kasab to be killed as a Bengaluru resident named "Samir Dinesh Chaudhari", with a "red (sacred) thread" tied around his wrist to portray the attack as a case of "Hindu terror", but their plan apparently did not succeed and the police nabbed Kasab. LeT had even given each terrorist a fake identity card listing an Indian address, to further strengthen the circumstantial narrative. If everything went according to plan, Kasab would have died as Chaudhari and the media would have blamed 'Hindu terrorists' for the attack. Kasab, in his confessional account, acknowledged this plot, as did David Headley, who corroborated this account by confirming that the sacred threads to be worn around the terrorists' wrists to identify them as Hindus, were procured from Mumbai's Siddhivinayak Temple.https://www.deccanherald.com/national/ajmal-kasab-was-given-hindu-identity-to-make-it-appear-hindu-terror-retired-ips-officer-rakesh-maria-805876.html Ajmal Kasab was given Hindu identity to make it appear Hindu terror Mritunjay Bose 18 February 2020 Deccan Herald 27 April 2019 30 May 2020 https://web.archive.org/web/20200530051403/https://www.deccanherald.com/national/ajmal-kasab-was-given-hindu-identity-to-make-it-appear-hindu-terror-retired-ips-officer-rakesh-maria-805876.html livehttps://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/defence/let-planned-to-project-26/11-attack-as-hindu-terror-rakesh-maria/articleshow/74192048.cms LeT planned to project 26/11 attack as Hindu terror: Rakesh Maria 18 February 2020 The Economic Times 27 April 2019 18 February 2020 https://web.archive.org/web/20200218203604/https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/defence/let-planned-to-project-26/11-attack-as-hindu-terror-rakesh-maria/articleshow/74192048.cms live
