Special election
A special election was held in the 47th district on November 5, 1974, alongside the general election. A special election for the state Senate was held on June 25, 1974, to fill the vacancy left by Anthony Stamm. Republican State Rep. Jack Welborn was elected to fill the vacancy, causing him to resign from the state House.
In August, Governor William Milliken called for a special election to fill the state House. He called for a special primary on September 10, and for the special general to be held on November 5. There was ultimately no primary held because each party had only one candidate for the special election.August 4, 1974 That Mini-Term 48 The Kalamazoo Gazette https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-kalamazoo-gazette-that-mini-term/208033868/ Newspapers.com October 11, 2026
The special election was won by Republican Robert A. Welborn, Jack Welborn's brother. He was sworn in on November 19.
The following are the official results as printed in the 1975–1976 Michigan Manual.
