This was the first season in which the team gave scholarships to black players; freshmen Richard Appleby, Chuck Kinnebrew, Horace King, Clarence Pope, and Larry West, dubbed "The Five," became the first black players in program history. However, since freshmen were not eligible to play varsity football in 1971 (that restriction was lifted in January 1972), the Bulldogs were one of three SEC schools which still fielded an all-white varsity, along with LSU and Ole Miss. All three fielded their first integrated varsity squads the next season.https://georgiadogs.com/news/2021/9/13/the-first-five-georgia-honoring-football-trailblazers.aspx The First Five: Georgia Honoring Football Trailblazers GeorgiaDogs.com September 13, 2021 January 20, 2022 Schedule 1971 AP September 11 w y 18 Oregon State Sanford Stadium Athens, GA 56–25 50,709 https://www.newspapers.com/article/statesman-journal-osu-falls-to-georgia-b/133885480/ The Oregon Statesman OSU falls to Georgia by 56–25 September 12, 1971 October 22, 2023 Newspapers.com September 18 w y 11 Tulane Sanford Stadium Athens, GA 17–7 51,542 https://www.newspapers.com/clip/87158256/georgia-clips-tulane/ The Atlanta Constitution Georgia clips Tulane September 19, 1971 October 15, 2021 Newspapers.com September 25 w y y 14 Clemson Memorial Stadium Clemson, SC rivalry 28–0 38,000 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-palm-beach-post-georgia-wallops-clem/133885601/ The Palm Beach Post-Times Georgia wallops Clemson September 26, 1971 October 22, 2023 Newspapers.com October 2 w 11 Mississippi State Sanford Stadium Athens, GA 35–7 53,003 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-charlotte-observer-unbeaten-bulldogs/133873013/ The Charlotte Observer Unbeaten Bulldogs battle Mississippi State, 35–7 October 3, 1971 October 22, 2023 Newspapers.com October 9 w y 10 Ole Miss Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium Jackson, MS 38–7 42,000 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-tampa-tribune-unbeaten-georgia-wallo/133883649/ The Tampa Tribune-Times Unbeaten Georgia wallops Ole Miss October 10, 1971 October 22, 2023 Newspapers.com October 16 w y 8 Vanderbilt Dudley Field Nashville, TN rivalry 24–0 16,000 https://www.newspapers.com/article/asheville-citizen-times-georgia-blanks-v/133882418/ Asheville Citizen-Times Georgia blanks Vanderbilt, 24–0 October 17, 1971 October 22, 2023 Newspapers.com October 23 w y 8 Kentucky Sanford Stadium Athens, GA 34–0 57,852 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-paducah-sun-third-period-power-carri/133874375/ The Paducah Sun-Democrat Third-period power carries Georgia past Kentucky 34–0 October 24, 1971 October 22, 2023 Newspapers.com October 30 w y y 7 South Carolina Carolina Stadium Columbia, SC rivalry 24–0 54,613 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-state-ray-led-georgia-slugs-gamecock/133885879/ The State Ray-led Georgia slugs Gamecocks, 24–0 October 31, 1971 October 22, 2023 Newspapers.com November 6 w y 7 Florida Gator Bowl Stadium Jacksonville, FL rivalry ABC 49–7 67,383 https://www.newspapers.com/article/tallahassee-democrat-dogs-bury-uf-by-49/133886006/ Tallahassee Democrat 'Dogs bury UF by 49–7 November 7, 1971 October 22, 2023 Newspapers.com November 13 l 7 Auburn 6 Sanford Stadium Athens, GA rivalry 20–35 62,891 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-tennessean-super-sully-sizzles-352/133884876/ The Nashville Tennessean Super Sully sizzles, 35–20 November 14, 1971 October 22, 2023 Newspapers.com November 25 w y y 7 Georgia Tech Grant Field Atlanta, GA rivalry ABC 28–24 60,124 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-atlanta-constitution-johnson-leads-r/133886169/ The Atlanta Constitution Johnson leads rally, Bulldogs topple Tech November 26, 1971 October 22, 2023 Newspapers.com December 31 w y y 6 North Carolina Gator Bowl Stadium Jacksonville, FL Gator Bowl NBC 7–3 71,208 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-charlotte-news-unc-loses-but-doesn/133886291/ The Charlotte News UNC loses, but doesn't go to the 'Dogs January 1, 1972 October 22, 2023 Newspapers.com Roster 1971 Georgia Bulldogs y 14 So Andy Johnson Andy Johnson (American football) QB y 70 So Jim Cagle DT y Vince Dooley References Georgia Category:Georgia Bulldogs football seasons Category:Gator Bowl champion seasons Georgia Bulldogs football
