Climatologists had predicted an extreme version of El Niño, known as a super El Niño, to occur during the winter of 2015–16. Although the Pacific Ocean’s warming water had been expected to bring strong storms to parts of the southwestern United States, actual precipitation totals generally underperformed those expectations.Blankenbuehler Paige El Niño adds fuel to Southwestern fires http://www.cortezjournal.com/article/20160622/NEWS01/160629966 June 25, 2016 The Journal June 22, 2016 Early in 2016, the National Interagency Fire Center predicted that an increased risk of fires in states such as California.Grenoble Ryan Here's Where The 2016 Wildfire Season Risk Is The Highest http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/wildfire-season-forecast-2016_us_57279d0ce4b0f309baf17c2d June 25, 2016 The Huffington Post The Huffington Post May 2, 2016 Background List of California wildfires The timing of "fire season" in California is variable, depending on the amount of prior winter and spring precipitation, the frequency and severity of weather such as heat waves and wind events, and moisture content in vegetation. Northern California typically sees wildfire activity between late spring and early fall, peaking in the summer with hotter and drier conditions. Occasional cold frontal passages can bring wind and lightning. The timing of fire season in Southern California is similar, peaking between late spring and fall. The severity and duration of peak activity in either part of the state is modulated in part by weather events: downslope/offshore wind events can lead to critical fire weather, while onshore flow and Pacific weather systems can bring conditions that hamper wildfire growth.Weather: Fire Season Climatology (Northern California) https://www.nwcg.gov/publications/pms437/weather/fire-season-climatology#TOC-Northern-California June 25, 2024 National Wildfire Coordinating Group April 25, 2024 May 13, 2021 https://web.archive.org/web/20210513095421/https://www.nwcg.gov/publications/pms437/weather/fire-season-climatology#TOC-Northern-California liveToohey Grace June 22, 2024 California wildfires have already burned 90,000 acres, and summer is just beginning https://www.latimes.com/environment/story/2024-06-22/spring-wildfire-sees-a-boom-concerning-for-rest-of-year June 25, 2024 Los Angeles Times June 25, 2024 https://web.archive.org/web/20240625010426/https://www.latimes.com/environment/story/2024-06-22/spring-wildfire-sees-a-boom-concerning-for-rest-of-year live Events In June, the United States Forest Service estimated that over 26 million trees trees has died in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, in part due to droughts, higher temperatures, and insect activity.Fears Darryl California is in flames right now, with fires fueled by historic drought https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/energy-environment/wp/2016/08/15/california-is-in-flames-right-now-with-fires-fueled-by-historic-drought/ August 16, 2016 The Washington Post August 16, 2016 On August 15, the National Interagency Fire Center reported that California's wildfires were some of the strongest on the West Coast. These lines are artificial barriers, like trenches or cleared vegetation, designed to stop the fire's spread, or natural barriers like rivers. Containment reflects progress in managing the fire but does not necessarily mean the fire is starved of fuel, under control, or put out.KCAL-TV Los Angeles What containment and other wildfire related terms mean September 12, 2024 https://www.cbsnews.com/losangeles/news/what-does-containment-mean-wildfire-evacuation-warning-order-red-flag/ 2025-07-25 Notes RefRoberts San Luis Obispo3,712May 18, 2016May 20, 2016Burned on Camp Roberts.Roberts Fire http://cdfdata.fire.ca.gov/incidents/incidents_details_info?incident_id=1258 CAL FIRE May 25, 2016 August 26, 2016 https://web.archive.org/web/20160826024257/http://cdfdata.fire.ca.gov/incidents/incidents_details_info?incident_id=1258 deadMetz Monterey3,876May 22, 2016May 25, 2016Metz Fire http://www.fire.ca.gov/current_incidents/incidentdetails/Index/1260 CAL FIRE May 25, 2016Coleman Monterey2,520June 4, 2016June 17, 2016Burned on Fort Hunter Liggett.Coleman Fire http://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/4761/ InciWeb June 21, 2016 June 11, 2016 https://web.archive.org/web/20160611172454/http://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/4761/ deadPony Siskiyou2,860 June 7, 2016June 30, 2016Pony Fire http://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/4769/ InciWeb June 24, 2016 June 11, 2016 https://web.archive.org/web/20160611115742/http://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/4769/ dead Sherpa Santa Barbara7,474June 15, 2016July 12, 2016Sherpa Fire http://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/4786/ InciWeb July 12, 2016 June 26, 2016 https://web.archive.org/web/20160626125722/http://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/4786/ deadBorder San Diego7,609June 19, 2016June 30, 20162 fatalities, 5 homes and 11 outbuildings destroyed Border Fire http://cdfdata.fire.ca.gov/incidents/incidents_details_info?incident_id=1289 CAL FIRE June 30, 2016 June 25, 2016 https://web.archive.org/web/20160625044234/http://cdfdata.fire.ca.gov/incidents/incidents_details_info?incident_id=1289 dead Pine Ventura2,304 June 19, 2016July 17, 2016Pine Fire http://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/4830/ September 1, 2016 Inciweb September 3, 2016 https://web.archive.org/web/20160903224901/http://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/4830/ dead San Gabriel Complex Los Angeles5,399June 20, 2016July 23, 2016Reservoir Fire burned 1,146 acres;
