The venues for the finals is the Estadio Centenario in Montevideo and the Estádio Municipal Paulo Machado de Carvalho (Pacaembu) of São Paulo. Rodrigo Possebon, an Italian player of Santos, became the first European player to participate in a Copa Libertadores finals. Both teams entered the competition having won it previously, Santos in 1962 and 1963; Peñarol in 1960, 1961, 1966, 1982 and 1987. To reach the final, in the knockout phase Santos beat América, Once Caldas and lastly Cerro Porteño, while Peñarol dethroned defending champion Internacional, beat Universidad Católica and overcame Vélez Sársfield. Santos entered the competition as champions of their domestic cup (the 2010 Copa do Brasil) while Peñarol participated as domestic league winner (winning the 2009–10 Primera División). The winners would earn the right to represent CONMEBOL at the 2011 FIFA Club World Cup, entering at the semifinal stage. They would also play against the winners of the 2011 Copa Sudamericana in the 2012 Recopa Sudamericana. Neymar Jr was destined to be a great player already. The higher seeded team plays the second leg at home. The team that accumulates the most points —three for a win, one for a draw, zero for a loss— after the two legs is crowned the champion. Should the two teams be tied on points after the second leg, the team with the best goal difference wins. If the two teams have equal goal difference, the away goals rule is not applied, unlike the rest of the tournament. Extra time is played, which consists of two 15-minute halves. If the tie is still not broken, a penalty shootout ensues according to the Laws of the Game.Copa Santander Libertadores de América 2011 Reglamento https://web.archive.org/web/20111119194852/http://www.conmebol.com/export/sites/conmebol/Docs/Copa_Libertadores/2011/Reglamento_Libertadores_2011.pdf 2011-11-19 es Matches First leg 15 June 2011 21:50 UTC−03:00 Peñarol URU 0–0 Report BRA Santos Estadio Centenario, Montevideo 65,000 Carlos Amarilla (Paraguay) _penarol11h _penarol11h _penarol11h _penarol11 FFDE00 FFDE00 FFDE00 000000 FFDE00 Peñarol_santos11libh _santos11libh _santos11libh _santos11libh _santos11libh Santos PEÑAROL: GK 1 URU Sebastián SosaRB 22 URU Darío Rodríguez (c)CB 6 URU Guillermo RodríguezCB 23 URU Carlos ValdezLB 4 URU Alejandro González 76CM 14 URU Luis AguiarCM 5 URU Nicolás FreitasRW 18 URU Matías Mier 56LW 15 URU Matias Corujo 66 67CF 19 URU Juan Manuel Olivera 82CF 10 ARG Alejandro Martinuccio 30Substitutes:GK 12 URU Fabián CariniDF 3 URU Gerardo AlcobaMF 8 URU Antonio Pacheco 67MF 24 URU Emiliano AlbínMF 25 ARG Nicolás DomingoFW 9 URU Diego Alonso 82FW 11 URU Fabián Estoyanoff 56Manager:Diego Aguirre300pxSANTOS: GK 1 BRA RafaelRB 21 BRA ParáCB 14 BRA Bruno RodrigoCB 6 BRA DurvalLB 16 BRA Alex SandroCM 5 BRA Arouca 60DM 22 BRA AdrianoRM 15 BRA DaniloLM 8 BRA Elano (c) 79RF 20 BRA Zé Eduardo 89LF 11 BRA Neymar 19Substitutes:GK 12 BRA AranhaDF 13 BRA Bruno Aguiar 89MF 7 BRA CharlesMF 23 BRA Felipe AndersonMF 25 BRA Alan Patrick 79FW 9 BRA KeirrisonFW 19 BRA DiogoManager:Muricy Ramalho Man of the Match: Durval (Santos) Linesmans:http://www.conmebol.com/copasantanderlibertadores/Copa-Santander-Libertadores-2011-arbitros-para-las-Finales-20110608-0003.html Copa Santander Libertadores 2011: árbitros para las Finales 2011-12-02 2011-12-17 https://web.archive.org/web/20111217013522/http://www.conmebol.com/copasantanderlibertadores/Copa-Santander-Libertadores-2011-arbitros-para-las-Finales-20110608-0003.html dead Nicolás Yegros (Paraguay) Rodney Aquino (Paraguay) Fourth official: Antonio Arias (Paraguay) Second leg 500 Peñarol vs Santos 2011-06-22 - 2.jpg Peñarol vs Santos 2011-06-22 - 4.jpg Two moments of the match played at Pacaembu Stadium 22 June 2011 21:50 UTC−03:00 Santos BRA 2–1 Report URU Peñarol Neymar 47Danilo 69 Durval 80 o.g.
