Knockout stage of the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup July 2023 The knockout stage of the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup began on 24 June and concluded on 28 June 2009 with the final at the Ellis Park Stadium, Johannesburg. It was the second and final stage of the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup, following the group stage. The top two teams from each group (four teams in total) advanced to the knockout stage to compete in a single-elimination style tournament. A third-place match was included and played between the two losing teams of the semi-finals. In the knockout stage (including the final), if a match was level at the end of 90 minutes, extra time of two periods (15 minutes each) would be played. If the score was still level after extra time, the match would be decided by a penalty shoot-out.July 2023 Qualified teams Group Winners Runners-up A ESP Spain RSA South Africa B BRA Brazil USA United States Bracket 24 June – Bloemfontein ESP 0 USA 2 25 June – Johannesburg BRA 1 RSA 0 28 June – Johannesburg USA 2 BRA 3 28 June – Rustenburg ESP (aet) 3 RSA 2 Semi-finals Spain v United States (2009 FIFA Confederations Cup) Spain v United States 24 June 2009 20:30 SAST ESP 0–2 Report USA Altidore 27Dempsey 74 Free State Stadium, Bloemfontein 35,369 Jorge Larrionda (Uruguay) _spain09h _spain09h _spain09h _spain09h _3_stripes_yellow FFFFFF FFFFFF FFFFFF FFFFFF 000040 Spain _borderonwhite _Us_kit _borderonwhite 002868 FFFFFF 002868 FFFFFF United States GK 1 Iker Casillas (c)RB 15Sergio RamosCB 3 Gerard Piqué 89CB 5 Carles PuyolLB 11Joan Capdevila 36DM 14Xabi AlonsoRM 10Cesc Fàbregas 68LM 18Albert Riera 78AM 8 XaviSS 7 David VillaCF 9 Fernando TorresSubstitutions:MF 20Santi Cazorla 68MF 22Juan Mata 78Manager:Vicente del Bosque300px GK 1 Tim HowardRB 21Jonathan SpectorCB 15Jay DeMeritCB 5 Oguchi OnyewuLB 3 Carlos Bocanegra (c)CM 13Ricardo ClarkCM 12Michael Bradley 0 87RW 8 Clint Dempsey 88LW 10Landon Donovan 5CF 9 Charlie Davies 69CF 17Jozy Altidore 28 83Substitutions:MF 22Benny Feilhaber 69FW 4 Conor Casey 83DF 2 Jonathan Bornstein 88Manager:Bob Bradley Man of the Match: Clint Dempsey (United States) Assistant referees: Pablo Fandiño (Uruguay) Mauricio Espinosa (Uruguay) Fourth official: Coffi Codjia (Benin) Fifth official: Alexis Fassinou (Benin) Brazil v South Africa 25 June 2009 20:30 SAST BRA 1–0 Report RSA Dani Alves 88 Ellis Park Stadium, Johannesburg 48,049 Massimo Busacca (Switzerland) _goldgreenborder _bra08h _goldgreenborder FFD630 FFD630 FFD630 2F5FD0 Brazil _rsa08a _rsa08a _rsa08a _yellow_stripes_adidas FFFFFF FFFFFF FFFFFF 008000 008000 South Africa GK 1 Júlio CésarRB 2 MaiconCB 3 Lúcio (c)CB 14LuisãoLB 16André Santos 61 82DM 8 Gilberto SilvaCM 5 Felipe Melo 31CM 18RamiresAM 10KakáSS 11RobinhoCF 9 Luís Fabiano 90+2Substitutions:DF 13Dani Alves 88 82MF 20Kléberson 90+2Manager:Dunga300px GK 16Itumeleng KhuneRB 2 Siboniso GaxaCB 4 Aaron Mokoena (c)CB 14Matthew BoothLB 3 Tsepo Masilela 45CM 5 Benson MhlongoCM 13Kagisho DikgacoiRW 10Steven Pienaar 90+3AM 8 Siphiwe Tshabalala 90+1LW 12Teko Modise 90+1CF 17Bernard ParkerSubstitutions:FW 9 Katlego Mphela 90+1FW 21Katlego Mashego 90+1MF 11Elrio van Heerden 90+3Manager:BRA Joel Santana Man of the Match: Steven Pienaar (South Africa) Assistant referees: Matthias Arnet (Switzerland) Francesco Buragina (Switzerland) Fourth official: Benito Archundia (Mexico) Fifth official: Héctor Vergara (Canada) Match for third place 28 June 2009 15:00 SAST ESP 3–2 y Report RSA Güiza 88 89Alonso 107 Mphela 73 90+3 Royal Bafokeng Stadium, Rustenburg 31,788 Matthew Breeze (Australia) _spain09h _spain09h _spain09h _spain09h _3_stripes_yellow FFFFFF FFFFFF FFFFFF FFFFFF 000040 Spain _rsa08h _rsa08h _rsa08h _adidasstripesongreen FFFFFF FFFFFF FFFFFF FFDF00 FFDF00 South Africa GK 1 Iker Casillas (c)RB 19Álvaro ArbeloaCB 3 Gerard Piqué 77CB 2 Raúl Albiol 84LB 11Joan CapdevilaDM 14Xabi AlonsoRM 20Santi CazorlaLM 18Albert RieraAM 12Sergio Busquets 39 81CF 9 Fernando Torres 57CF 7 David Villa 57Substitutions:FW 17Dani Güiza 57MF 21David Silva 57FW 16Fernando Llorente 115 81Manager:Vicente del Bosque300px GK 16Itumeleng KhuneRB 2 Siboniso GaxaCB 4 Aaron Mokoena (c)CB 14Matthew BoothLB 3 Tsepo Masilela 108CM 13Kagisho DikgacoiCM 6 MacBeth SibayaRW 12Teko Modise 69LW 10Steven Pienaar 47 64SS 8 Siphiwe Tshabalala 84CF 17Bernard ParkerSubstitutions:FW 9 Katlego Mphela 77 64MF 11Elrio van Heerden 69MF 5 Benson Mhlongo 84Manager:BRA Joel Santana Man of the Match: Xabi Alonso (Spain) Assistant referees: Matthew Cream (Australia) Ben Wilson (Australia) Fourth official: Coffi Codjia (Benin) Fifth official: Alexis Fassinou (Benin) Final 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup Final The 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup Final was held at Ellis Park Stadium, Johannesburg, South Africa, on 28 June 2009 and was contested by the United States and Brazil.
