The magnitude 7.0 mainshock was preceded by an w y 6.2 foreshock 10 minutes earlier, and was followed 42 minutes later by an w 6.6 aftershock. Geology This part of Indonesia is an area of complex tectonics. The epicenter of the earthquake lies close to the boundary between two proposed microplates, the Bird's Head and Maoke microplates. The motion along this boundary has been modelled as about 80 mm/year sinistral (left lateral) strike-slip. The computed focal mechanism is consistent either with movement on this boundary or on a dextral (right lateral) strike-slip structure conjugate to it. Damage The earthquake destroyed nine villages, namely Aiyari, Randawaya, Hamtimoi, Karowaiti, Waita, Waridoni, Tare, Larelahiti and Wabudayar,http://www.thejakartaglobe.com/news/papua-earthquake-destroys-nine-villages-homeless-in-need-of-aid/381038 Papua Earthquake Destroys Nine Villages; Homeless in Need of Aid Jakarta Globe Antara 17 June 2010 https://web.archive.org/web/20120224061823/http://www.thejakartaglobe.com/news/papua-earthquake-destroys-nine-villages-homeless-in-need-of-aid/381038 24 February 2012 killed 17 people and injured 75 others, 6 seriously.https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsww/Quakes/us2010xpai.php Magnitude 7.0 – NEAR THE NORTH COAST OF PAPUA, INDONESIA United States Geological Survey 16 June 2010 19 June 2010http://edition.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/asiapcf/06/21/indonesia.earthquake/ CNN Indonesian earthquake death toll climbs to 17 21 June 2010 22 June 2010 https://web.archive.org/web/20100625020639/http://edition.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/asiapcf/06/21/indonesia.earthquake/ 25 June 2010 live https://cdn.bmkg.go.id/Web/Gempa-Signifikan-dan-Merusak-Per-Tahun-1821-2017.pdf KATALOG GEMPABUMI SIGNIFIKAN DAN MERUSAK 1821-2017 Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency id October 16, 2022 January 7, 2020 https://web.archive.org/web/20200107023709/https://cdn.bmkg.go.id/Web/Gempa-Signifikan-dan-Merusak-Per-Tahun-1821-2017.pdf dead More than 2,500 houses were destroyed.https://www.theaustralian.com.au/news/latest-news/powerful-quake-that-struck-indonesias-papua-province-leaves-at-least-17-dead/news-story/7c852696a3eddaec49546ab0a2d5cc87 Powerful quake that struck Indonesia's Papua province leaves at least 17 dead 21 June 2010 23 June 2010 subscription The Australian While Mercalli intensities of VI (Strong) affected the island of Biak, intensities of more than VII (Very strong) affected Serui (on Yapen) and on the neighbouring coast of the mainland.http://www.bmg.go.id/dataDetail.bmkg?Jenis=Teks&IDS=5408481373414691018&IDD=7178393671303394585 PETA ISOSEISMAL GEMPABUMI BIAK 7.1 S.R TANGGAL 16 JUNI 2010 Isoseismal map for the 7.1 ML Biak earthquake 16 June 2010 Badan Meteorologi Klimatologi dan Geofisika 18 June 2010 id 19 June 2010 https://web.archive.org/web/20110716143306/http://www.bmg.go.id/dataDetail.bmkg?Jenis=Teks&IDS=5408481373414691018&IDD=7178393671303394585 16 July 2011 Many buildings were damaged on Yapen Island.https://www.nbcnews.com/id/wbna37722165 Strong quakes rock eastern Indonesia; 3 dead NBC News Associated Press, Reuters 16 June 2010 19 December 2016http://news.brisbanetimes.com.au/breaking-news-world/earthquakes-kill-three-in-indonesia-20100616-yfqw.html Earthquakes kill three in Indonesia Pelu Sali Brisbane Times Agence France-Presse 16 June 2010 19 December 2016 27 February 2012 https://web.archive.org/web/20120227102433/http://news.brisbanetimes.com.au/breaking-news-world/earthquakes-kill-three-in-indonesia-20100616-yfqw.html dead See also List of earthquakes in 2010 List of earthquakes in Indonesia 2002 West Papua earthquake References ISC-GEM Global Instrumental Earthquake Catalogue (1900–2009) http://www.isc.ac.uk/iscgem/index.php ISC 19 January 2015 International Seismological Centre Version 2.0 External links Rnzi.com: "Indonesia Yapen Quake death toll rises to 22" 600181845 2010 Papua Papua Papua earthquake Papua earthquake Papua Category:June 2010 in Indonesia
