Led by third-year head coach Jim Walden, the Cyclones compiled an overall record of 6–5 with a mark of 4–3 in conference play, placing fourth in the Big 8. Iowa State played home games at Cyclone Stadium in Ames, Iowa. This was the first time that Iowa State played against Minnesota since 1923. On October 8, 1923, Jack Trice, the first African-American to play football at Iowa State, died after suffering injuries in a game against Minnesota that occurred two days before his death. There was speculation that the injuries caused by the Minnesota players were intentional. Because of this, Iowa State did not renew their contract to play with Minnesota until the 1989 season.Wright Branson Jack Trice's life and football career were tragically cut short – the first African-American to play varsity at Iowa State died from injuries suffered in a 1923 game https://andscape.com/features/jack-trice-life-and-football-career-were-tragically-cut-short/ Andscape October 30, 2017 March 6, 2020 Schedule 1989 AP Central September 9 7:00 p.m. w y Ohio Cyclone Stadium Ames, IA 28–3 41,614 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-gazette-isu-blaises-in-opener/174117823/ The Gazette ISU 'Blaises' in opener September 10, 1989 June 8, 2025 Newspapers.com September 16 Noon l y Minnesota Cyclone Stadium Ames, IA 20–30 45,410 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-sioux-city-journal-thompson-schaffn/174123110/ The Sioux City Journal Thompson, Schaffner lift Gophers September 17, 1989 June 8, 2025 Newspapers.com September 23 Noon l y Iowa Cyclone Stadium Ames, IA rivalry ABC 21–31 54,458 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-des-moines-register-iowa-extends-dom/174123237/ The Des Moines Register Iowa extends dominance; ISU miscues costly, 31–21 September 24, 1989 June 8, 2025 Newspapers.com September 30 7:00 p.m. w y y Tulane Louisiana Superdome New Orleans, LA 25–24 33,206 https://www.newspapers.com/clip/21545700/ Sioux City Journal Bryant lifts Cyclones to victory over Tulane October 1, 1989 February 8, 2022 Newspapers.com October 7 1:00 p.m. w y Kansas Memorial Stadium Lawrence, KS 24–20 31,500 https://www.newspapers.com/article/globe-gazette-isu-wins-in-offensive-expl/174123386/ Globe-Gazette ISU wins in offensive explosion October 8, 1989 June 8, 2025 Newspapers.com October 14 Noon l y Colorado 3 Cyclone Stadium Ames, IA 17–52 41,515 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-daily-nonpareil-no-3-colorado-shows/174119603/ The Daily Nonpareil No. 3 Colorado shows ISU why October 15, 1989 June 8, 2025 Newspapers.com October 21 1:00 p.m. l Oklahoma 25 Cyclone Stadium Ames, IA 40–43 40,812 https://www.newspapers.com/article/quad-city-times-sooners-turn-back-stubbo/174122525/ Quad-City Times Sooners turn back stubborn Cyclones October 22, 1989 June 8, 2025 Newspapers.com October 28 1:30 p.m. l y Nebraska 4 Memorial Stadium Lincoln, NE rivalry 17–49 76,371 https://www.newspapers.com/article/chicago-tribune-colorado-geared-for-nebr/174121489/ Chicago Tribune Colorado geared for Nebraska October 29, 1989 June 8, 2025 Newspapers.com November 4 1:00 p.m. w Kansas State Cyclone Stadium Ames, IA 36–11 rivalry 40,332 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-gazette-cyclones-keep-alive-shot-at/174123678/ The Gazette Cyclones keep alive shot at 6–5 November 5, 1989 June 8, 2025 Newspapers.com November 11 1:30 p.m. w y Missouri Faurot Field Columbia, MO rivalry 35–21 36,538 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-daily-nonpareil-iowa-state-down-21/174123841/ The Daily Nonpareil Iowa State, down, 21–0, rips Mizzou November 12, 1989 June 8, 2025 Newspapers.com November 18 1:30 p.m. w y Oklahoma State Lewis Field Stillwater, OK 31–21 33,200 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-des-moines-register-bryants-feet-ca/174123974/ The Des Moines Register Bryant's feet carry Iowa State to rare feat November 19, 1989 June 8, 2025 Newspapers.com Iowa State Football Record Book http://www.cyclones.com//pdf9/2335086.pdf?SPSID=48323&SPID=4653&DB_LANG=C&DB_OEM_ID=10700 Iowa State University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics November 25, 2014 https://web.archive.org/web/20140106033150/http://www.cyclones.com//pdf9/2335086.pdf?SPSID=48323&SPID=4653&DB_LANG=C&DB_OEM_ID=10700 2014-01-06 dead Roster 1989 Iowa State Cyclones f 85 Sr Mike Busch TE 16 Sr Brent Oberg QB 69 Sr Keith Sims G y 31 Sr Paul Thibodeaux RB 54 Sr Trent Van Hoosen OL 57 Sr Rick Wells OL 32 So Ron Wilkinson RB 72 Jr Gene Williams OL 11 Jr Marcus Robertson DB y *Jim Walden References Iowa State Category:Iowa State Cyclones football seasons Iowa State Cyclones football
