Voters chose three representatives, or electors to the Electoral College, who voted for president and vice president. Alaska was won by incumbent President Gerald Ford (R-Michigan) with 57.9% of the popular vote against Jimmy Carter (D-Georgia) with 35.7%. Carter ultimately won the national vote however, defeating Ford and becoming the next President. Alaska has only voted Democratic once, and that was in 1964 for Lyndon B. Johnson. With 57.9% of the popular vote, Alaska would prove to be Ford's fifth strongest state in the 1976 election after Utah, Idaho, Wyoming and Nebraska.https://uselectionatlas.org/RESULTS/stats.php?year=1976&f=0&off=0&elect=0 1976 Presidential Election Statistics Dave Leip’s Atlas of U.S. Presidential Elections 2018-03-05 Libertarian candidate Roger MacBride also had his strongest showing in Alaska, which would continue to provide a base of votes for the new party.http://clerk.house.gov/member_info/electioninfo/1976election.pdf Statistics of the Presidential and Congressional Election of November 2, 1976 Clerk.house.gov 2013-09-03https://uselectionatlas.org/RESULTS/state.php?year=1976&fips=2&f=0&off=0&elect=0 1976 Presidential General Election Results - Alaska 2013-04-14 Dave Leip's Atlas of U.S. Presidential Elections Results 1976 United States presidential election in AlaskaPartyCandidateVotesPercentageElectoral votes Republican Gerald Ford (incumbent) 71,555 57.90% 3 Democratic Jimmy Carter 44,058 35.65% 0 Libertarian Roger MacBride 6,785 5.49% 0 N/A Write-in 1,176 0.95% 0 Totals 123,574 100.00% 3 Boroughs and Census Areas that flipped from Republican to Democratic Northwest Arctic Borough Yakutat Boroughs and Census Areas that flipped from Democratic to Republican Wade Hampton Census Area See also United States presidential elections in Alaska References Category:1976 Alaska elections Alaska 1976
