Len Ardell Independent chair presidential The 1989 Nelson-Marlborough Regional Council election was a local election held from September to 14 October 1989 in the Nelson-Marlborough region of New Zealand, as part of that year's regional council elections and other local elections held nation-wide. Postal voting and the first-past-the-post voting system were used.Voting papers in Friday's mail https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/CHP19890927.2.22 7 June 2026 The Press 27 September 1989 3 This was the first and only election to the regional council; the authority had been formed as part of the 1989 reforms to local government and was later disestablished in 1992. Thirteen positions were contested across four constituencies, corresponding with the region's territorial authority areas at the time. Campaign There was healthy competition for the available positions. There were 14 candidates in Nelson, 30 in Marlborough, 23 in Tasman, and 6 in Kaikoura, i.e. 73 candidates in total. All candidates stood as independents, although the Krammer brothers held party affiliations. Ted Krammer had stood in the 1981 general election for the National Party in the Tasman electorate, and John Krammer unsuccessfully sought the Labour Party nomination for the Nelson electorate in the 1990 general election.Tasman stalwarts chase Nelson electorate seat https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/CHP19900918.2.24 7 June 2026 The Press 18 September 1990 3 Results The following table shows the members elected: Name Regional constituency Bryan Seddon 1 Kaikoura Leo McKendry Marlborough Glenys Baldick 1 Marlborough Lin Randle 1 Marlborough Basil Parkes 1 Marlborough Len Ardell Nelson Craig Potton Nelson Derek Shaw 1 Nelson Ted Krammer 1 Nelson John Krammer 1 Tasman Murray Borlase 1 Tasman David Ogilvie 1 Tasman Elaine Henry 1 Tasman Kaikoura constituency +Kaikoura constituency Kaikoura (1) https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/CHP19891006.2.126.21 25 May 2026 The Press 6 October 1989 36Nelson-Marlborough https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/CHP19891016.2.34 25 May 2026 The Press 16 October 1989 4AffiliationCandidateVotes% Independent Independent Bryan Seddon48127.52 Independent Independent Jim Gameson 423 24.20 Independent Independent Don McKenzie 280 16.02 Independent Independent Errol Parker 246 14.07 Independent Independent Richard Latter 217 12.41 Independent Independent Lindsay Clemett 101 5.78 Informal ? ?
