This was the first NBA All-Star Game held in New York City. Joe Lapchick of the Knickerbockers coached the Eastern Division and John Kundla of the Minneapolis Lakers coached the Western Division, as the Knickerbockers and Lakers had led their respective divisions entering the game. The attendance was 16,487. The Eastern Division held an 84–82 edge with only seconds remaining in the game. Then, George Mikan of the Lakers was fouled. Mikan proceeded to make both foul shots, which sent the game into overtime. In the extra period, Eastern Division's Bob Cousy scored 10 points to secure a 98–93 victory. The Western Division's Jim Pollard, the game's high scorer with 23 points, had been named game's Most Valuable Player (MVP) in a vote taken before regulation time had run out. However, another ballot was taken and Cousy was finally named the game MVP. The All-Star Game, despite going into overtime, was the last All-Star Game in which neither side reached 100 points.NBA All-Star Game – NBA All-Star Game Spoilers, Episode Guides, Message Board | TVGuide.com Roster +Eastern All-StarsPos.PlayerTeamNo. of selectionsStartersGBob CousyBoston Celtics4thCRay FelixBaltimore Bullets1stC/FEd MacauleyBoston Celtics4thGDick McGuireNew York Knickerbockers3rdF/CDolph SchayesSyracuse Nationals4thReservesG/FCarl BraunNew York Knickerbockers2ndF/CHarry GallatinNew York Knickerbockers4thCNeil JohnstonPhiladelphia Warriors2ndG/FPaul SeymourSyracuse Nationals2ndGBill SharmanBoston Celtics2ndHead coach: Joe Lapchick (New York Knicks) +Western All-StarsPos.PlayerTeamNo. of selectionsStartersF/CMel HutchinsFort Wayne Pistons2ndGSlater MartinMinneapolis Lakers2ndCGeorge MikanMinneapolis Lakers4thFJim PollardMinneapolis Lakers3rdGBobby WanzerRochester Royals3rdReservesGBob DaviesRochester Royals4thC/FLarry FoustFort Wayne Pistons4thFJack MolinasFort Wayne Pistons1stGAndy PhillipFort Wayne Pistons4thCArnie RisenRochester Royals3rdG/FDon SunderlageMilwaukee Hawks1stHead coach:John Kundla (Minneapolis Lakers) Eastern Division Legend Starter MVP  MIN  Minutes played  FG  Field goals  FGA  Field goal attempts  FT  Free throws  FTA  Free throw attempts  REB  Rebounds  AST  Assists  PF  Personal fouls  PTS  Points Player Team MIN FG FGA FT FTA REB AST PF PTS Bob CousyBoston Celtics3461588114120 Ray FelixBaltimore Bullets324855111413 Ed MacauleyBoston Celtics254115613213 Dolph SchayesSyracuse Nationals24134612116 Dick McGuireNew York Knickerbockers2425004214 Bill SharmanBoston Celtics30692423314 Carl Braun Carl Braun (basketball)New York Knickerbockers2948114239 Harry GallatinNew York Knicks28025618305 Neil JohnstonPhiladelphia Warriors2029247216 Paul Seymour Paul Seymour (basketball)Syracuse Nationals1926441328Totals2653176364471241898 Western Division Player Team MIN FG FGA FT FTA REB AST PF PTS Jim PollardMinneapolis Lakers4110223533323 Bobby WanzerRochester Royals365132326612 George MikanMinneapolis Lakers316186891518 Mel HutchinsFort Wayne Pistons3118124253 Slater MartinMinneapolis Lakers2315000332 Bob DaviesRochester Royals318162355418 Larry FoustFort Wayne Pistons27191115013 Arnie RisenRochester Royals20410017058 Andy PhillipFort Wayne Pistons1914013312 Don SunderlageMilwaukee Hawks612220114 Jack Molinaslower-alpha Jack Molinas was suspended and ultimately banned from the NBA for life after 32 games into his playing career for betting on games while playing college basketball at Columbia University.Fort Wayne Pistonssuspended – replaced by Andy PhillipTotals26538107172648243493 Notes lower-alpha References General http://www.nba.com/history/allstar/1954-all-star-game-recap/index.html 1954 All-Star Game recap August 17, 2011 NBA.com Turner Sports Interactive, Inc February 13, 2012 http://www.nba.com/history/allstar/boxscore_1954.html https://web.archive.org/web/20030416050500/http://www.nba.com/history/allstar/boxscore_1954.html dead April 16, 2003 1954 All-Star Game Boxscore NBA.com Turner Sports Interactive, Inc February 13, 2012 http://www.nba.com/history/allstar/recap_1954.html 1954 All-Star Game: East 98, West 93 NBA.com Turner Sports Interactive, Inc February 13, 2012 https://www.basketball-reference.com/allstar/NBA_1954.html 1954 NBA All-Star Game basketball-reference.com Sports Reference LLC February 13, 2012 Specific External links NBA All-Star Game History NBA.com: All-Star Game: Year-by-Year Results February 2012 Category:NBA All-Star Game All-Star Game Category:Sports competitions in Manhattan Category:Basketball in New York City NBA All-Star Game Category:Basketball competitions in New York City NBA All-Star Game Category:1950s in Manhattan
