Season summary Following consecutive fourth-place finishes, the 2002-03 Raiders won only four Horizon League games, stumbling through a 1-6 stretch near the end of the year that was largely uncompetitive. Reportedly Coach Schilling himself was questioning whether his team had quit on the season.Dave Lance February 24, 2003 Schilling to team: Play hard or quit https://daytondailynews.newspapers.com/image/410516621/ 126 150 D1 Dayton Daily News Cox Media It was the sort of season that gets a coach fired. The team could shoot, but it was small and overwhelmed many nights. Attendance had dropped off about 2,000 fans a night from the highs during the 90's, and was trending down.Tom Archdeacon March 6, 2003 Coach's fate was sealed https://daytondailynews.newspapers.com/image/410582710/ 126 160 D1 Dayton Daily News Cox Media All three freshman recruits were unavailable because two quit before the season began and a third was injured. The junior college transfers made only modest contributions to the cause. He had been brought in to follow the legendary Ralph Underhill, and he embraced the herculean task of producing a top 50 program with top 40 attendance.Tom Archdeacon January 12, 1997 To dream, but first to win https://daytondailynews.newspapers.com/image/408642674/ 120 120 D1 Dayton Daily News Cox MediaMarc Katz April 10, 1997 Schilling's deal revealed https://daytondailynews.newspapers.com/image/409113545/ 120 207 C6 Dayton Daily News Cox Media This perhaps unrealistic goal was again mentioned after his dismissal. The swarm of players quitting the team, or in some cases dismissed from it, was not unexpected during the transition to a new coach, but instead of abating it became a yearly theme. Not every player who left was a big contributor, but it became a troubling pattern. Whether it was bad luck or poor recruiting, it looked bad. In the end, 25 players had left the Raiders program with eligibility remaining in just six seasons.Tom Archdeacon March 5, 2003 Schilling's dream fading https://daytondailynews.newspapers.com/image/410579374/?match=1&terms=%22Ed%20Schilling%22 126 159 D1 Dayton Daily News Cox Media Roster changes Joining Trent Vaughn (F) a junior college 3-point shooter from Itawamba.Sean McClelland April 20, 2002 Raiders land a shooter https://daytondailynews.newspapers.com/image/410029058/ 125202 202 2D Dayton Daily News Cox Media Lloyd Walls (C) a junior college post player from Ivine Valley College.Sean McClelland May 12, 2002 Raiders sign new big man https://daytondailynews.newspapers.com/image/410671728/ 125224 224 D1 Dayton Daily News Cox Media Drew Burleson (F) recruited from Wheelersburg unfortunately began his college career with ankle surgery.Sean McClelland November 20, 2001 Third recruit signs with Raiders https://daytondailynews.newspapers.com/image/410614718/ 12449 49 2D Dayton Daily News Cox MediaSean McClelland November 7, 2002 Freshman forward needs ankle surgery https://daytondailynews.newspapers.com/image/410412055/ 12640 40 2D Dayton Daily News Cox Media Leaving Mark Surgalski was recruited out of Ashland, Kentucky; but did not start school in September.Sean McClelland November 15, 2001 WSU to get rugged Kentuckian https://daytondailynews.newspapers.com/image/410677110/ 12444 44 Dayton Daily News Cox MediaDave Lance September 19, 2002 Bond with family costs Raiders a recruit https://daytondailynews.newspapers.com/image/410333893/ 125354 354 Dayton Daily News Cox Media Donta Patterson was recruited out of Columbus Brookahaven; but left the team citing burnout before the season began.Sean McClelland January 17, 2002 Raiders Insider https://daytondailynews.newspapers.com/image/410045919/ 124107 107 Dayton Daily News Cox MediaSean McClelland November 2, 2002 Wright St. freshman quits team https://daytondailynews.newspapers.com/image/410409279/ 12635 35 Dayton Daily News Cox Media Malcolm Andrews was dismissed from the team in February.
