Villa won their second match in succession against League new boys. Forward Billy Dorrell made his Villa debut aged 22 after joining from Leicester Fosse for a fee of £250. The match turned out rather closer than predicted. Small Heath's Jack Hallam opened the scoring from a Tommy Hands cross with the first League goal of the season, "for the match was started punctually, and it would have been a sheer impossibility to score faster than the Small Heath player did." Steve Smith equalised for Villa some 20 minutes later, and a Bob Gordon goal meant they took the lead immediately afterwards, and retained that lead to the end. The Birmingham Daily Post was disappointed by Fred Wheldon, "usually the bright particular star of the front rank".Notes on Sport Birmingham Daily Post 3 September 1894 5https://www.avfchistory.co.uk/game/210 Aston Villa (Champions) 2-1 Small Heath, 1894-95 Division One, 1 Sep 1894 AVFC History 6 August 2023 8 Sep 1894 2nd Round Liverpool 1–2 https://www.avfchistory.co.uk/game/211 Aston Villa W 🟩 15 Sep 1894 3rd Round Aston Villa 1–2 https://www.avfchistory.co.uk/game/212 Sunderland L 🟥 22 Sep 1894 4th Round Derby County 0–2 https://www.avfchistory.co.uk/game/213 Aston Villa W 🟩 29 Sep 1894 5th Round Stoke 4–1 https://www.avfchistory.co.uk/game/214 Aston Villa L 🟥 6 Oct 1894 6th Round Nottingham Forest 2–1 https://www.avfchistory.co.uk/game/215 Aston Villa L 🟥 13 Oct 1894 7th Round Aston Villa 3–1 https://www.avfchistory.co.uk/game/216 West Bromwich Albion W 🟩 20 Oct 1894 8th Round Small Heath 2–2 https://www.avfchistory.co.uk/game/217 Aston Villa D 🟨The reverse fixture in the Second City derby resulted in a 2-2 draw on 20 October 1894 with Bob Gordon and Denny Hodgetts scoring for Villa.(2-0-1)https://www.avfchistory.co.uk/game/217 Small Heath 2-2 Aston Villa (Champions), 1894-95 Division One, 20 Oct 1894 AVFC History 6 August 2023 22 Oct 1894 9th Round Sheffield United 2–1 https://www.avfchistory.co.uk/game/218 Aston Villa L 🟥 27 Oct 1894 10th Round Aston Villa 5–0 https://www.avfchistory.co.uk/game/219 Liverpool W 🟩 3 Nov 1894 11th Round Sheffield Wednesday 1–0 https://www.avfchistory.co.uk/game/220 Aston Villa L 🟥 10 Nov 1894 12th Round Aston Villa 4–1 https://www.avfchistory.co.uk/game/221 Preston North End W 🟩 12 Nov 1894 13th Round Aston Villa 5–0 https://www.avfchistory.co.uk/game/222 Sheffield United W 🟩 Played in driving freezing rain.
