It determined the Big Ten Conference's automatic berth into the 2016 NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship. Maryland entered the tournament as the defending champions. The top-seeded Maryland Terrapins won the Big Ten title for a third consecutive year, defeating the third-seed, Wisconsin in the championship match, 2–1. Maryland's D. J. Reeves opened the scoring 90 seconds into the match, while Wisconsin's Tom Barlow tied the game in the 12th minute. Shortly before halftime, Maryland's Sebastian Elney headed in a Jorge Calix cross to give Maryland the 2–1 lead, which would prove to be the final scoreline. It was the first time since Indiana accomplished the feat in 1996, that a team won three consecutive Big Ten tournaments. The tournament for the first time in its history was not hosted by a university in the conference. Instead, the quarterfinal matches were played at the campus sites of the higher seed, while the semifinal and championship fixtures were played at the Grand Park in Westfield, Indiana, about 10 miles north of downtown Indianapolis. Seeds The top four teams participate in the tournament. The seeding is based on the program's conference record during the 2016 Big Ten Conference season.2016 Big Ten Men's Soccer Tournament Bracket Announced http://www.bigten.org/sports/m-soccer/spec-rel/103016aaa.html Big Ten Conference BigTen.org December 25, 2016 October 30, 2016 https://web.archive.org/web/20161226055845/http://www.bigten.org/sports/m-soccer/spec-rel/103016aaa.html December 26, 2016 dead SeedSchoolConferenceTiebreaker1Maryland7–0–12Indiana 3–0–53Wisconsin 4–2–24Michigan State4–3–15Penn State4–46Ohio State3–4–1OSU 1–0Ohio State Shuts Out Northwestern, 1-0, in B1G Opener http://www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com/sports/m-soccer/recaps/091016aaa.html Ohio State Buckeyes The Ohio State University December 25, 20167Northwestern3–4–1NWU 0–18Michigan1–6–19Rutgers0–6–2 Bracket y First RoundNov. 5 QuarterfinalsNov. 6 SemifinalsNov. 11 FinalNov. 13 8 Michigan 2 9 Rutgers 1 1 Maryland (2OT) 3 8 Michigan 2 4 Michigan State 2 5 Penn State 1 3 Wisconsin 3 6 Ohio State 0 2 Indiana 1 7 Northwestern 0 1 Maryland 2 4 Michigan State 1 3 Wisconsin (pen.) 1 (4) 2 Indiana 1 (3) 1 Maryland 2 3 Wisconsin 1 Results First round November 4 1:00 PM EDT #8 Michigan 2–1 Report #9 Rutgers Atuahene 32Cerda 63 Perez 56 Ludwig Field College Park, Maryland 139 Jorge Cuate Quarterfinals November 6 1:00 PM EDT #3 Wisconsin 3–0 Report yes #6 Ohio State Barlow 53Koenig 57Mueller 80 McClimon Field Madison, Wisconsin 788 Keith Angel November 6 1:00 PM EDT #4 Michigan State 2–1 Report #5 Penn State Barone 19Fiscus 75 Maloney 41 DeMartin Soccer Complex East Lansing, Michigan 786 Gregory Dopka November 6 1:00 PM EDT #1 Maryland 3–2 yes Report #8 Michigan Eckenrode 30 o.g.Reeves 44Campbell 102 Anderson 42Atuahene 51 Ludwig Field College Park, Maryland 2,637 Abbey Okulaja November 6 1:05 PM EDT #2 Indiana 1–0 Report yes #7 Northwestern Swartz 91 Bill Armstrong Stadium Bloomington, Indiana 1,245 Cesar Ibarra Semifinals November 11 12:00 PM EDT #1 Maryland 2–1 Report #4 Michigan State Wild 17Sejdic 61 Niedermeier 86 o.g.
