In the May 23 primary, conservative state Representative Bill Sali edged out a crowded field to win the Republican nomination with 26%, while Larry Grant won the Democratic nomination. Sali is a controversial figure in Idaho politics who clashed repeatedly with Republican leadership in the Idaho Legislature. Some of Sali's Republican detractors publicly said that they would back Grant in the general election. All this gave Grant a boost in the general election, but Sali remained favored given the GOP tilt of the area and the popular Otter at the top of the ticket. Grant made gains late in the campaign, but Sali held on to win.http://www.ourcampaigns.com/NewsDetail.html?NewsID=36450 Our Campaigns - News - [ID-1] Solidly Republican, Suddenly in Doubt - Oct 24, 2006 Republican primary Candidates Bill Sali, Idaho State Representative Robert Vasquez, Canyon County Commissioner Sheila Sorensen, Idaho State Senator Keith Johnson, Idaho State Controller Norm Semanko, attorney Skip Brandt, Idaho State Senator Results Republican primary resultshttp://www.sos.idaho.gov/elect/RESULTS/2006/primary/tot_stwd.htm 2006 Primary Results statewide 2017-05-10 https://web.archive.org/web/20150419071536/http://www.sos.idaho.gov/elect/results/2006/primary/tot_stwd.htm 2015-04-19 dead Bill Sali Republican Party (United States) 18,985 25.82 Republican Party (United States) Robert Vasquez 13,624 18.53 Republican Party (United States) Sheila Sorensen 13,472 18.32 Republican Party (United States) Keith Johnson 13,186 17.93 Republican Party (United States) Norm Semanko 7,976 10.85 Republican Party (United States) Skip Brandt 6,289 8.55 73,532 100.00 Democratic primary Larry Grant, attorney Cecil Kelly III, small business owner Results Democratic Party primary resultshttp://www.sos.idaho.gov/elect/RESULTS/2006/primary/tot_stwd.htm 2006 Primary Results statewide 2017-05-10 https://web.archive.org/web/20150419071536/http://www.sos.idaho.gov/elect/results/2006/primary/tot_stwd.htm 2015-04-19 dead Larry Grant Democratic Party (United States) 10,885 74.78 Cecil Kelly III Democratic Party (United States) 3,671 25.22 14,556 100.00 General election Predictions SourceRankingAs of The Cook Political Report2006 Competitive House Race Chart http://cookpolitical.com/house/charts/race-ratings House: Race Ratings Cook Political Report 6 November 2006 20 November 2023 https://web.archive.org/web/20070927210001/http://www.cookpolitical.com/races/report_pdfs/2006_house_comp_nov6.pdf 27 September 2007Tossup November 6, 2006 Rothenberg2006 House Ratings http://rothenbergpoliticalreport.com/ratings/house House Ratings The Rothenberg Political Report 6 November 2006 20 November 2023 https://web.archive.org/web/20061107153417/http://rothenbergpoliticalreport.blogspot.com/2006/11/2006-house-ratings_06.html 7 November 2006Tilt R November 6, 2006 Sabato's Crystal Ball2006 House http://www.centerforpolitics.org/crystalball/2006/house/ Sabato's Crystal Ball 6 November 2006 20 November 2023 https://web.archive.org/web/20061110210331/http://www.centerforpolitics.org:80/crystalball/2006/house/ 10 November 2006Tilt D flip November 6, 2006 Real Clear PoliticsBattle for the House of Representatives http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/writeup/battle_for_the_house_of_representatives-51.html realclearpolitics.com Real Clear Politics 12 December 2023 https://web.archive.org/web/20061109025111/http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/writeup/battle_for_the_house_of_representatives-51.html 9 November 2006 7 November 2006Lean R November 7, 2006 CQ PoliticsBalance of Power Scorecard: House http://www.cqpolitics.com/risk_rating_house.html cqpolitics.com Congressional Quarterly Inc 20 November 2023 https://web.archive.org/web/20061117202830/http://www.cqpolitics.com/risk_rating_house.html 17 November 2006Lean R November 7, 2006 Results Idaho's 1st congressional district election, 2006 Republican Party (United States) Bill Sali 115,843 49.94 Democratic Party (United States) Larry Grant 103,935 44.80 Independent (politician) Dave Olson 6,857 2.96 Natural Law Party (United States) Andy Hedden-Nicely 2,882 1.24 Constitution Party (United States) Paul Smith 2,457 1.06 231,974 100.00 Republican Party (United States) District 2 2006 Idaho's 2nd congressional district election Idaho presidential no 2004 United States House of Representatives elections in Idaho#District 2 2004 2008 United States House of Representatives elections in Idaho#District 2 2008 x150px x150px Mike Simpson Republican Party (US) 132,262 62.0% x110px Jim Hansen Democratic Party (US) 73,441 34.4% U.S. Representatives Mike Simpson Republican Party (US) Mike Simpson Republican Party (US) x230px County results x230px Precinct results 300 Simpson: #f1b4b2 40–50% #ed8883 50–60% #e55751 60–70% #d02823 70–80% #b00600 80–90% #850000 >90% Hansen: #b4c7ec 40–50% #8da9e2 50–60% #678cd7 60–70% #416fcd 70–80% Hedrick: #3D2266 >90% #808080 No votes This district encompasses Eastern Idaho, the Magic Valley, and most of the city of Boise.
