The 1998 Maryland gubernatorial election was held on November 3, 1998 to elect the governor and lieutenant governor of Maryland. Democratic incumbent Parris Glendening was re-elected to a second term in office over Ellen Sauerbrey in a rematch of the 1994 election. Glendening defeated Sauerbrey by a much larger margin than he had in 1994.Sauerbrey aides say discrepancies prove vote fraud https://www.baltimoresun.com/1994/12/16/sauerbrey-aides-say-discrepancies-prove-vote-fraud/ 2022-12-15 Baltimore Sun
Glendening easily won the Democratic primary after defeating several candidates. Sauerbrey also easily won her party's nomination.
Despite the controversial nature of the previous election, Governor Glendening comfortably beat back Sauerbrey's spirited challenge, winning his second and final term as governor. 2024, this was the last time that Allegany County voted Democratic in a gubernatorial election and the last time that the lieutenant gubernatorial nominee of the winning ticket was not a person of color.
