Alongside competing in the Fourth Division, the club also participated in the FA Cup and the League Cup. Colchester bounced back to the Third Division at the first attempt under Bobby Roberts with a largely unchanged team from the previous season. He led them to a third-place finish in the league, while in the FA Cup, Colchester took First Division Derby County to a replay in the fourth round. In the League Cup, it took Second Division Millwall three attempts to dispatch the U's in a replay following the initial two legs. Season overview Colchester made an instant return to the Third Division after the board kept the faith in manager Bobby Roberts. The season began strongly with twelve successive home victories. Despite a first round League Cup defeat to Millwall, an impressive FA Cup run saw the U's lose out in the fourth round to First Division Derby County in a replay at the Baseball Ground. Over 14,000 fans had seen Colin Garwood equalise in the seventh minute of injury time in the first match at Layer Road. A settled side aided Colchester's progress across the season. Eight players played over 40 of the 46 league games. The two favoured forwards of Bobby Gough and Colin Garwood registered 17 and 16 goals respectively, while centre-half Steve Dowman scored twelve goals in his debut season. Colchester were promoted in third position behind only Cambridge United and Exeter City.https://www.cu-fc.com/news/2012/july/the-1970s-and-1980s/ The 1970s and 1980s Hudson Matt 11 July 2012 Colchester United FC 25 April 2018 Players match played 14 May 1977.http://coludata.co.uk/content.php?pg=appearances&pd=1010#frmft=True&pg=appearances&pd=1010&fsea=37&fplist=all&flgcup=all&fcompstShowAll=&fdfaShowAll= Appearances Coludata.co.uk 18 February 2018 Name Position Nationality Place of birth Date of birth Apps Goals Signed from Date signed Fee GoalkeepersMike WalkerGKWALColwyn Bay1976 6 1 1945 11 28 y1490ENG WatfordJuly 1973£4,000 DefendersMicky CookFBENGEnfield1976 6 1 1951 4 9 y28910ENG Orient1 March 1969Free transferSteve DowmanCBENGIlford1976 6 1 1958 4 15 y00Apprentice24 August 1976DGFree transferMick PackerFBENGWillesden1976 6 1 1950 4 20 y1204ENG WatfordJuly 1973Free transferLindsay SmithCBENGEnfield1976 6 1 1954 9 18 y18312Apprentice20 April 1971DGFree transferJohnny WilliamsFBENGTottenham1976 6 1 1947 3 26 y390ENG WatfordJune 1976Undisclosed MidfieldersRay BunkellMFENGEdmonton1976 6 1 1949 9 18 y855ENG Swindon TownDecember 1973Part exchangePaul DyerMFENGLeicester1976 6 1 1953 1 24 y402ENG Notts CountySummer 1975UndisclosedSteve FoleyMFENGClacton-on-Sea1976 6 1 1953 6 21 y13929ApprenticeJuly 1969Free transferSteve LeslieMFENGHornsey1976 6 1 1952 9 4 y18734Apprentice20 April 1971DG Date of signing refers to the date of the player's first game for the clubFree transfer ForwardsIan AllinsonWGENGHitchin1976 6 1 1957 10 1 y60ApprenticeSummer 1974Free transferJohn FroggattFWENGStanton Hill1976 6 1 1945 12 13 y9823ENG Boston UnitedSummer 1974£6,000Colin GarwoodFWENGHeacham1976 6 1 1949 6 29 y152ENG Huddersfield TownFebruary 1976£4,000Bobby GoughFWENGLadywood1976 6 1 1949 7 20 y225ENG SouthportJanuary 1976£7,000 Transfers In Date Position Nationality Name From Fee Ref.24 August 1976CBENGSteve DowmanApprenticeFree transferhttp://coludata.co.uk/item.php?pg=player&it=379 Steve Dowman (Defender) Coludata.co.uk 18 February 2018 DG Date of signing refers to the date of the player's first game for the club Total spending: ~ £0 Out Date Position Nationality Name To Fee Ref.End of seasonCBENGBarry DomineyENG Yeovil TownReleasedhttp://coludata.co.uk/item.php?pg=player&it=363 Barry Dominey Coludata.co.uk 18 February 2018 End of seasonCBENGDerek HarrisonENG Salisbury CityReleasedhttp://coludata.co.uk/item.php?pg=player&it=371 Derek Harrison Coludata.co.uk 18 February 2018 End of seasonWGENGTerry AndersonFree agentReleasedhttp://coludata.co.uk/item.php?pg=player&it=360 Terry Anderson Coludata.co.uk 18 February 2018 August 1976GKENGLee SmeltMargateFree transferhttp://www.margatefootballclubhistory.com/leesmelt.shtml Lee Smelt Margate Football Club history 18 February 2018 23 November 1976FBENGStewart BrightChelmsford CityFree transferhttp://coludata.co.uk/item.php?pg=player&it=374 Stewart Bright Coludata.co.uk 18 February 2018 Total incoming: ~ £0 Loans in Date Position Nationality Name From End date Ref.19 February 1977GKENGGlenn EllisENG Ipswich Town22 February 1977http://coludata.co.uk/item.php?pg=player&it=380 Glen Ellis (Goalkeeper) Coludata.co.uk 18 February 2018 Loan Loan start and end dates refer to the date of the player's first and final games for the club Match details Fourth Division 1976–77 Football League Results round by round table b Round Ground A/H/A/H/A/H/A/H/A/H/A/A/H/H/H/A/H/A/H/A/H/A/H/H/H/A/H/A/A/H/A/A/H/A/A/H/A/H/A/H/H/A/H/A/A/H Result L/W/L/W/L/W/D/W/D/W/L/L/W/W/W/W/W/L/W/L/W/W/W/L/W/L/W/W/L/W/W/W/L/D/D/D/D/D/D/W/W/D/W/W/L/W Position 24/7/13/9/14/8/10/5/5/6/9/11/10/5/6/3/3/4/3/4/4/3/2/2/2/5/3/2/4/3/3/2/3/2/2/3/2/3/3/3/2/2/2/3/4/3 Home Away green2 Win yellow2 Draw red2 Loss green1 red1 11v11.com 24 April 2018 League table Fourth Division y COL Matches 1976 8 21 y 1 Cambridge United 2–0 Report Colchester United Biley 8 38 Abbey Stadium Cambridge 3,056 John Homewood L 1976 8 24 y 2 Colchester United 3–0 Report Halifax Town Allinson 74 75Gough 89 Layer Road Colchester 2,489 D Reeves W 1976 8 28 y 3 Rochdale 1–0 Report Colchester United Hanvey 65 Spotland Stadium Rochdale 1,440 T Mills L 1976 9 4 y 4 Colchester United 3–1 Report Exeter City Froggatt 25Cook 54Garwood 59 Smith 30 o.g.
