American author Mark Twain attended the race as part of an adventure and research project for his 1897 book Following the Equator. Twain write "Nowhere in the world have I encountered a festival of people that has such a magnificent appeal to the whole nation. The Cup astonishes me. The Melbourne Cup is the Australasian National Day. It would be difficult to overstate its importance. It overshadows all other holidays and specialised days of whatever sort in that congeries of colonies. Overshadows them? I might almost say it blots them out."More than a century since Mark Twain, America tries its luck at Australia’s greatest race https://thestraight.com.au/more-than-a-century-since-mark-twain-america-tries-its-luck-at-australias-greatest-race/#:~:text=race%20%E2%80%93%20The%20Straight-,More%20than%20a%20century%20since%20Mark%20Twain%2C%20America%20tries%20its,say%20it%20blots%20them%20out.%E2%80%9D thestraight.com.au 27 December 2025 This is the list of placegetters for the 1895 Melbourne Cup.1891 to 1900 Melbourne Cup Winners http://www.races.com.au/melbourne-cup/melbourne-cup-history/past-winners/1891-to-1900-melbourne-cup/#1895 races com au 28 May 2022 PlaceNameJockeyTrainerOwner1AurariaJohn StevensonJohn H.
