Miller, The Social History of Crime and Punishment in America: An Encyclopedia (2012), p. 1172. The song paints Ricky's youth as his undoing. It was believed for a long time that guitarist Dave Sabo got the idea from a newspaper article about an 18-year-old named Ricky who was sentenced to life imprisonment for killing his friend with a gun that, due to alcohol, he most likely guessed was not loaded. The writing process eventually led the song to being about an accidental murder. The music video also alludes to this. Critical reception Pan-European magazine Music & Media described single as "a dramatic hard rock ballad complete with raw vocals and spicy guitars" and left a verdict: "Powerful stuff."https://www.worldradiohistory.com/UK/Music-and-Media/80s/1989/M&M-1989-11-04.pdf#page=13 Previews: Singles: Skid Row – "18 and Life" Music & Media November 4, 1989 24 6 44 Amsterdam European Music Report BV May 1, 2025 World Radio History https://web.archive.org/web/20250121122408/https://worldradiohistory.com/UK/Music-and-Media/80s/1989/M&M-1989-11-04.pdf#page=13 January 21, 2025 Personnel Sebastian Bach – vocals Dave Sabo – guitars Scotti Hill – guitars Rachel Bolan – bass Rob Affuso – drums Charts Weekly charts Chart (1989–1990)PeakpositionCanada RPM 6 4940 July 20, 2022 trueEurope (Eurochart Hot 100)Eurochart Hot 100 Singles Music & Media 7 7 V February 17, 199030Ireland2 5 18 and Life true July 20, 2022New Zealand 50 Skid Row 18 and Life trueSweden 17 Skid Row 18 and Life trueUK 12 19900210 true August 23, 2020Billboardhot100 4 Skid Row true August 23, 2020Billboardmainstreamrock 11 Skid Row true August 23, 2020 Year-end charts Chart (1989)PositionCanada Top Singles (RPM)https://recherche-collection-search.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/home/record?IdNumber=5115&app=rpm Top Singles Singles of '89 RPM Library and Archives Canada December 23, 1999 November 22, 201780US Billboard Hot 1001989 The Year in Music: Top Pop Singles Billboard 101 51 Y-22 December 23, 1989http://longboredsurfer.com/charts/1989 Billboard Top 100 – 1989 October 3, 201661 Certifications United States single Skid Row 18 and Life Gold 1989 1989 July 20, 2022 "riaa" true Release history RegionDateFormat(s)Label(s)Ref.
