The 1917 season was Dan McGugin's 14th year as head coach. The south's first national champion Georgia Tech gave Vanderbilt its biggest loss in school history, 83 to 0. Vandy captain Alfred T. Adams praised the Tech team: "Tech's magnificent machine won easily over Vanderbilt. It was simply the matter of a splendid eleven winning over an unseasoned, inexperienced team. "Tech played hard, clean football, and we were somewhat surprised to meet such a fair, aggressive team, after the reports we had heard. I think that Vanderbilt could have broken that Tech shift if we had had last year's eleven. Being outweighed, Vanderbilt could not check the heavy forwards, or open up the line. Thereby hangs the tale."https://smartech.gatech.edu/bitstream/handle/1853/26097/1917-11-06_07_06.pdf?sequence=1 The Technique Vanderbilt Completely Overwhelmed 4 November 6, 1917 Schedule October 6 w y 1917 Transylvania Crimsons Transylvania Dudley Field Nashville, TN 41–0 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-commercial-appeal-transylvania-littl/148549734/ The Commercial Appeal Transylvania little trouble for Vandy October 7, 1917 June 2, 2024 Newspapers.com October 13 l y y Chicago Stagg Field Chicago, IL 0–48 Maroons Crush Southern Team in 48-0 Game: Vanderbilt Knocked Flat by Stagg's Newly Buit Machine Chicago Tribune Maroon October 14, 1917 II-3 https://www.newspapers.com/clip/115281323/maroons-crush-southern-team/ Newspapers.com October 20 w y y Kentucky Stoll Field Lexington, KY rivalry 5–0 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-birmingham-news-kentucky-state-is-pu/148549812/ The Birmingham News Kentucky State is put out by Vandy October 21, 1917 June 2, 2024 Newspapers.com October 27 w Howard (AL) Dudley Field Nashville, TN 69–0 https://www.newspapers.com/clip/101833246/vandy-swamps-howard-eleven/ The Journal and Tribune Vandy swamps Howard eleven October 28, 1917 May 14, 2022 Newspapers.com November 3 l y Georgia Tech Grant Field Atlanta, GA rivalry 0–83 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-state-yellow-jackets-rout-vanderbilt/148549869/ The State Yellow Jackets rout Vanderbilt November 4, 1917 June 2, 2024 Newspapers.com November 10 w y Alabama Rickwood Field Birmingham, AL 7–2 https://www.newspapers.com/clip/71293079/gritty-commodores-fight-their-way-to/ Nashville Banner Gritty Commodores fight their way to victory November 11, 1917 February 17, 2021 Newspapers.com November 17 l Auburn Dudley Field Nashville, TN 7–31 https://www.newspapers.com/clip/101834988/auburn-triumphs-over-vanderbilt-commodor/ The Birmingham News Auburn triumphs over Vanderbilt Commodores in annual tilt November 18, 1917 May 14, 2022 Newspapers.com November 29 w Sewanee Dudley Field Nashville, TN rivalry 13–6 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-journal-and-tribune-vandy-wins-from/136969508/ The Journal and Tribune Vandy wins from Tigers November 30, 1917 December 17, 2023 Newspapers.com https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/schools/vanderbilt/1917-schedule.html 1917 Vanderbilt Commodores Schedule and Results References Vanderbilt Category:Vanderbilt Commodores football seasons Vanderbilt Commodores football
