The 1936–37 Jersey Reds season was officially the sixth professional basketball season played by the Jersey Reds franchise and their third season played in the city of North Bergen, New Jersey under their proper Jersey Reds name after they previously played their first three seasons as the Union City Reds (two of which were played in the revived version of the Metropolitan Basketball League) in nearby Union City, New Jersey. Entering this season, the ABL would technically see six teams competing in their league throughout the entire season, though they wouldn't be the same six teams throughout the entire season due to the Atlantic City Sandpipers / Sand Snipers (who took over the spot held by the Passaic Red Devils at the time) being replaced by the New York Celtics (who technically would be related to the famous Original Celtics team) when going from the first half of the season to the second half of the season. For the first half of the season, the Reds would finally return to the best success that they had since their brief time in the revived Metropolitan Basketball League back when they were in Union City as the Jersey franchise would get a well above-average 14–4 record to get a first place finish in that particular half of the season. As for the second half of the season, while Jersey would still do well enough for an above-average 12–8 finish on that particular half of the season, the Reds ultimately would get a second place finish for that half of the season behind the Philadelphia SPHAs / Hebrews. Due to the split season formatting used for this season, the ABL's championship series would consist of the two best teams from each half-season of play, which would be the Jersey Reds and the Philadelphia SPHAs / Hebrews in this case. Initially, the Reds looked like they would get their first championship in franchise history with them being ahead 3–1 in the best-of-seven series being played after Philadelphia won the first game of the series. Unfortunately for Jersey, Philadelphia would end up bouncing back with two close matches (one of which might have been a game that went into an overtime period) and a blowout win to have the Philadelphia SPHAs / Hebrews upset the Jersey Reds 4–3 after the Reds initially had a commanding series lead, which denied the Jersey Reds their first ABL championship series in the process. However, by the start of the second half of the season, the team would rebrand themselves to the Brooklyn Jewels (likely because of the inclusion of the New York (Original) Celtics for the second half of the season following the departure of the Atlantic City Sandpipers / Sand Snipers near the end of the first half of the season) for the rest of that season only going forward.Team Standings by Year https://probasketballencyclopedia.com/team-standings-by-year/?y=1936-1937&t=New%20York%20Jewels Pro Basketball Encyclopedia Note1 b b The Brooklyn Visitations originally moved from Brooklyn, New York to Paterson, New Jersey to become the Paterson Visitations early on before the first half of the season began.
