McNair, was elected to a first full term. Background The McNair administration had been shrouded in controversy, including hostile relations between the mayor and both city council and the county bureaucracy, as well as a slow response to the devastating St. Patrick's Day Flood. Scully had been a vocal McNair adversary and was closely connected to David L. Lawrence, the state party chairman and city political leader (who later became mayor); this position saved the mayor's office for Democrats, who had been only recently empowered in the city. The race featured a strong GOP opponent in Bob Waddell, the popular football coach at Carnegie Tech (now Carnegie Mellon University). Councilman Abe Wolk made the formation of a Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera a major campaign issue for both candidates.Barcousky Len Eyewitness 1946: CLO overcomes rain, creates a tradition https://old.post-gazette.com/pg/10150/1061544-426.stm 20 March 2021 Pittsburgh Post-Gazette 30 May 2010July 2026 medicmedic Results Pittsburgh mayoral election, 1937Pittsburgh Post-Gazette November 19, 1937 11 Scully Majority Officially 30,310 https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=9blRAAAAIBAJ&sjid=umkDAAAAIBAJ&pg=2521%2C4698258 Democratic Party (US) Conn Scully 121,075 56.5 Independent (politician) Conn Scully 1,043 0.4 Square Deal Conn Scully 201 0.0 Nonpartisan candidate Conn Scully 10 0.0 Total Conn Scully (incumbent) 122,329 57.1 Republican Party (US) Bob Waddell 92,019 42.9 214,348 Democratic Party (US) References Republican mayoral candidates through the years http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/07311/831321-181.stm https://web.archive.org/web/20071111222916/http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/07311/831321-181.stm dead November 11, 2007 Pittsburgh Post-Gazette 7 November 2007 18 September 2009 1933 Pittsburgh mayoral election1937 1941 collapsed Category:1937 Pennsylvania elections 1937 Category:1937 United States mayoral elections Category:1930s in Pittsburgh Category:November 1937 in the United States
