Not only was he the youngest winner of a World Championship marathon, he was the first gold medalist for his country ever. The early leader was Ser-Od Bat-Ochir, then Daniele Meucci and Ruggero Pertile getting camera time to the half way mark while the favorites including defending champion Stephen Kiprotich stayed slightly off the pace. Ghebreslassie marked the more experienced runners. Tsepo Ramonene made a breakaway at 25 km opening up a 30-second lead. As he watched two Kenyans drop out and other favorites struggle, Ghebreslassie decided to set loose at 34 km. Over the next couple of kilometers, he made up the gap and passed Ramonene with authority. But a couple of kilometers later Yemane Tsegay passed Ghebreslassie. Tsegay's lead only lasted two minutes until Ghebreslassie took the lead for good. Over the final kilometers, he extended his lead to 40 seconds. Running relaxed and fast like an exuberant teenager, he was handed an Eritrean flag as he entered the stadium.http://www.iaaf.org/competitions/iaaf-world-championships/news/beijing-2015-marathon-ghebreslassie REPORT: MEN'S MARATHON – IAAF WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS, BEIJING 2015 22 August 2015 iaaf.org 27 August 2015 He held his flag but kept on running past the finish line until officials were able to tell him he was done. “I’ve never finished in a stadium before.” Behind him, in comparison, Tsegay, Solomon Mutai and the other runners finished looking as if they had just finished a marathon.http://running.competitor.com/2015/08/news/eritreas-ghirmay-ghebreslassie-wins-world-championships-mens-marathon_134038#qjh8E7JwqVkqlzVT.99 Eritrea's Ghirmay Ghebreslassie Wins World Championships Men's Marathon - Competitor.com 22 August 2015 https://web.archive.org/web/20150905153219/http://running.competitor.com/2015/08/news/eritreas-ghirmay-ghebreslassie-wins-world-championships-mens-marathon_134038#qjh8E7JwqVkqlzVT.99 5 September 2015 dead Records Prior to the competition, the records were as follows:http://www.iaaf.org/records/by-discipline/road-running/marathon/outdoor/men Records & Lists – Marathon IAAF 18 August 2015 World recordDennis Kipruto Kimetto KEN2:02:57Berlin, Germany28 September 2014Championship recordAbel Kirui KEN2:06:54Berlin, Germany22 August 2009World LeadingEliud Kipchoge KEN2:04:42London, Great Britain26 April 2015African RecordDennis Kipruto Kimetto KEN2:02:57Berlin, Germany28 September 2014Asian RecordToshinari Takaoka JPN2:06:16Chicago, United States13 October 2002North, Central American and Caribbean recordKhalid Khannouchi USA2:05:38London, Great Britain14 April 2002South American RecordRonaldo da Costa BRA2:06:05Berlin, Germany20 September 1998European RecordBenoit Zwierzchiewski FRA2:06:36Paris, France6 April 2003Oceanian recordRobert de Castella AUS2:07:51Boston, United States21 April 1986 Qualification standards Time 2012 IAAF World Championships Beijing 2015 – Standards http://media.aws.iaaf.org/competitioninfo/544c7d0a-0807-4226-a85b-79928c58a097.pdf IAAF 18 August 2015 2:18:00 Schedule Date Time Round22 August 2015 07:35 Final All times are local times (UTC+8) Results The race was started at 07:35.Final results KEY:NRNational recordPBPersonal bestSBSeasonal best Rank Name Nationality Time Notes Ghirmay Ghebreslassie ERI 2:12:27 Yemane Tsegay ETH 2:13:07 SB Solomon Mutai UGA 2:13:29 04 4 Ruggero Pertile ITA 2:14:22 SB 05 5 Shumi Dechasa BHR 2:14:35 06 6 Stephen Kiprotich UGA 2:14:42 07 7 Lelisa Desisa ETH 2:14:53 08 8 Daniele Meucci ITA 2:14:53 09 9 Amanuel Mesel ERI 2:15:06 10 Jackson Kiprop UGA 2:15:15 11 Pak Chol PRK 2:15:44 SB 12 Alphonce Felix Simbu TAN 2:16:58 13 Javier Guerra SPA 2:17:00 14 Tsepo Mathibelle LES 2:17:17 SB 15 Berhanu Lemi ETH 2:17:37 16 Abdelhadi El Hachimi BEL 2:17:41 17 Aleksey Reunkov RUS 2:18:12 18 Solonei da Silva BRA 2:19:20 19 Tadesse Abraham SUI 2:19:25 20 Roman Fosti EST 2:20:35 21 Masakazu Fujiwara JPN 2:21:06 SB 22 Mark Korir KEN 2:21:20 23 Cuthbert Nyasango ZIM 2:22:15 SB 24 Xu Wang CHN 2:23:08 25 Ian Burrell USA 2:23:17 SB 26 Pierre-Célestin Nihorimbere BDI 2:23:29 27 Ezekiel Jafary TAN 2:23:43 SB 28 Scott Smith USA 2:23:53 SB 29 Anuradha Cooray SRI 2:25:04 30 Cephas Pasipamiri ZIM 2:25:05 SB 31 Roman Prodius MDA 2:26:46 32 Edwin Kipchirchir Kemboi AUT 2:28:06 33 Ho Chin-ping TPE 2:28:14 34 Guan Siyang CHN 2:30:17 35 Henri Manninen FIN 2:30:22 SB 36 David Nilsson SWE 2:31:24 37 Gilbert Mutandiro ZIM 2:31:35 38 Bat-Ochiryn Ser-Od MGL 2:32:09 39 Noh Si-hwan KOR 2:32:35 40 Kazuhiro Maeda JPN 2:32:49 41 Desmond Mokgobu RSA 2:34:11 42 Fabiano Joseph Naasi TAN 2:35:27 SB 43 Wissem Hosni TUN DNF 43 Bekir Karayel TUR DNF 43 Abraham Kiplimo UGA DNF 43 Edmilson Santana BRA DNF 43 Ivan Babaryka UKR DNF 43 Oleksandr Babarynka UKR DNF 43 Jeffrey Eggleston USA DNF 43 Sibusiso Nzima RSA DNF 43 Gilberto Lopes BRA DNF 43 Muhan Hasi CHN DNF 43 Richer Pérez CUB DNF 43 Beraki Beyene ERI DNF 43 Carles Castillejo SPA DNF 43 Mihail Krassilov KAZ DNF 43 Yu Seung-yeop KOR DNF 43 Dennis Kipruto Kimetto KEN DNF 43 Wilson Kipsang Kiprotich KEN DNF 43 Mohammad Jafar Moradi IRI DNF 43 Aadam Ismaeel Khamis BHR DNF 43 Hasan Mahboob BHR DNF 43 Adil Annani MAR DNF 43 Rachid Kisri MAR DNF 43 Abel Villanueva PER DNF 43 Marius Ionescu ROM DNF 43 Thabiso Benedict Moeng RSA DNF 43 Guor Marial SSD DNS References Marathon Category:Marathons at the World Athletics Championships Category:Marathons in China Category:Men's marathons
