The Americans only got three more hits versus Sandy Koufax and Stu Miller. American starter Jim Bunning pitched three perfect innings, but Don Schwall allowed a bases-loaded single to Bill White that tied the game in the sixth. All five hits the Nationals got were charged to Schwall. Camilo Pascual pitched three shutout innings before the game was called due to rain after nine innings with the score 1–1. This was the first of two all-star games in 1961. From 1959 to 1962, two such were held each season to increase the money going to the players' pension fund. This practice ended after the owners agreed to give the players a larger share of the income from a single game.Sandomir Richard Richard Sandomir When Midsummer Had Two Classics https://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/15/sports/baseball/15sandomir.html 8 June 2022 The New York Times 15 July 2008 https://web.archive.org/web/20220324121059/https://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/15/sports/baseball/15sandomir.html 24 March 2022 live en Rosters Players in italics have since been inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
