The Bulldogs were led by first-year head coach Brent Thompson and played their home games at Johnson Hagood Stadium. They played as members of the Southern Conference, as they have since 1936. With their win over Samford on November 4, the Bulldogs clinched their second consecutive, and fourth overall, SoCon championship. By virtue of their victory over VMI on November 12, 2016, The Citadel completed their first undefeated SoCon season in program history and claimed the championship outright. The win over VMI also marked the second time in program history that the Bulldogs earned double digit wins in one season, after winning 11 games in 1992. They finished the season 10–2, 8–0 in SoCon play to win the SoCon title. They received the SoCon's automatic bid to the FCS Playoffs where they lost in the second round to Wofford. Schedule The Bulldogs planned to host 2016 North Greenville Crusaders North Greenville for their traditional Parents' Day game on October 8.http://www.citadelsports.com/news/2015/8/20/FB_0820152445.aspx?path=football The Citadel Bulldogs The Citadel Sets 2016 Schedule August 20, 2015 December 6, 2015 Due to Hurricane Matthew, the game against North Greenville took place at NGU's Younts Stadium in Tigerville, South Carolina on Thursday, October 6.http://www.postandcourier.com/20161004/161009776/citadel-football-game-moved-to-thursday-at-north-greenville https://web.archive.org/web/20161005135156/http://www.postandcourier.com/20161004/161009776/citadel-football-game-moved-to-thursday-at-north-greenville dead October 5, 2016 Post and Courier Charleston, SC October 4, 2016 October 4, 2016 Citadel football game moved to Thursday at North Greenville Jeff Hartsell 2016 NCAA Division I FCS STATS Eastern September 1 Thursday 7:00 pm w y 15 Mercer Moye Complex Macon, GA FSN 24–23 12,542 September 10 6:00 pm w 15 Furman Johnson Hagood Stadium Charleston, SC rivalry ESPN3 19–14 12,009 September 17 6:00 pm w y y 15 Gardner–Webb Ernest W. The work resulted in the entire east side being closed for the first game of the season against Furman and some sections being opened for subsequent games. The capacity was thus 10,500 for the first game and about 15,000 for later games.http://www.postandcourier.com/20160829/160829380/citadel-considers-tearing-down-visitors-side-at-johnson-hagood-stadium https://web.archive.org/web/20160901001926/http://www.postandcourier.com/20160829/160829380/citadel-considers-tearing-down-visitors-side-at-johnson-hagood-stadium dead September 1, 2016 Post and Courier Jeff Hartsell Charleston, SC August 29, 2016 Citadel considers tearing down visitors’ side at Johnson Hagood Stadium October 12, 2016http://www.postandcourier.com/20160909/160909467/citadel-football-returns-to-half-of-johnson-hagood-stadium https://web.archive.org/web/20160911112210/http://www.postandcourier.com/20160909/160909467/citadel-football-returns-to-half-of-johnson-hagood-stadium dead September 11, 2016 Post and Courier Jeff Hartsell Charleston, SC September 9, 2016 Citadel football returns to (half of) Johnson Hagood Stadium October 12, 2016http://www.postandcourier.com/20161011/161019898/citadel-home-at-last-with-nations-best-4-road-wins https://web.archive.org/web/20161012150016/http://www.postandcourier.com/20161011/161019898/citadel-home-at-last-with-nations-best-4-road-wins dead October 12, 2016 Post and Courier Jeff Hartsell Charleston, SC October 11, 2016 Citadel home at last, with nation’s best 4 road wins October 12, 2016 Game summaries Mercer 2016 Mercer Bears football team #15 Bulldogs 21 0 0 3 Bears 10 10 3 0 September 1, 2016 Moye Complex, Macon, GA 7:00 PM EST 2:49 12,542 86°F • ESE 12 • Mostly cloudy Larry Saunders Darren Goldwater, Ray Goff, Lyndsay Rowley FSN yes 14:21 1 CIT Tyler Renew 70-yard run (Cody Clark kick) CIT 7–0 12:59 1 CIT Cam Jackson 8-yard run (Clark kick) CIT 14–0 7:44 1 MER Cole Fisher 26-yard field goal CIT 14–3 5:46 1 CIT Reggie Williams 29-yard run (Clark kick) CIT 21–3 3:08 1 MER John Russ 38-yard run (Fisher kick) CIT 21–10 11:21 2 MER Fisher 31-yard field goal CIT 21–13 6:46 2 MER Russ 1-yard run (Fisher kick) CIT 21–20 1:33 3 MER Fisher 47-yard field goal MER 23–21 8:16 4 CIT Clark 35-yard field goal CIT 24–23 yes Furman 2016 Furman Paladins football team The Citadel–Furman football rivalry Paladins 7 0 7 0 #15 Bulldogs 7 6 0 6 September 10, 2016 Johnson Hagood Stadium, Charleston, SC 6:00 PM EST 2:53 12,009 Marshall Lewis Kevin Fitzgerald, Saddath Jean-Pierre ESPN3 yes 12:38 1 FUR Andrej Suttles 12-yard pass from P.J.
